Activity 2

Learning and Teaching: EDC's research and programs can be found in all 50 U.S. states. Work in school reform, mathematics, science, technology, and literacy continued to expand with such projects as the development and testing of hand-held games to enhance classroom learning and a study of the effectiveness of online learning. The U.S. Department of Education funded Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI), based at EDC, conducted many large-scale studies and fast response reviews on requested issues such as dropout prevention and the use of data. A leader in early childhood education innovations and staff professional development for more than 20 years, EDC provided HeadStart training and support to sites throughout New England.

Activity 3

Health and Human Development: Health initiatives expanded to address the underlying social and economic factors of issues such as violence and suicide prevention, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, HIV and AIDs. EDC continued to create, apply and evaluate health-related curriculum, training materials, interventions and evaluation tools for policy makers, providers and consumers to improve prevention, treatment and palliative care. EDC continued to support practitioners at local, state, and national levels as well as operate several national centers including the Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) to offer strategies to prevent substance abuse and mental disorders, the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention which supports college and university campuses, and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center.
