FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Division of nursing: during the past year, we have continued to support our members that continue to experience the physical, mental health, and family challenges resulting from the covid-19 pandemic. The division has listened to our members who voice their ongoing support for a hybrid module for continuing nursing education (cne) including in-person, online and live synchronous learning opportunities. Region-based & online programs fall, 2022-spring 2023 resulted in 32 in-person programs with 1,219 participants and 31 online programs with 1,871 participants. In may 2023, members of the division, published a white paper titled; "examining occupational safety & health administration (osha) recordkeeping data to determine trends in worker injuries & illnesses related to covid-19." the paper was written based on the data collection and findings from a 2-year research study that was led by members from the division of nursing. This team is currently expanding this study to examine trends in worker illnesses and injuries related to covid-19 in recent years. The mna annual convention was held on october 6, 2022 at mechanics hall in worcester massachusetts. The one-day event marked a return to face-to-face programming and the membership welcomed the opportunity to reconnect and learn together. The day was rich with information and education including a presentation that focused on labor issues impacting nursing practice in massachusetts and beyond. The 17th annual clinical nursing conference was presented on may 5th in norwood massachusetts. Two-hundred and eighty-six members participated in a variety of educational seminars including: connecting the dots between trauma & addiction, the diet debacle: unravel the myths, a nurse's guide to anticoagulant management, what's new in diabetes care: 2023 american diabetes association standards of care, interpretation of abnormal lab values in the intermediate medicine patient, not your grandma's wound care and cannabis stigmatization, disclosure and risk assessment. Osha research project: in may, chris pontus, judith pare, and a team of consultants concluded work on a 2-year study that focused worker injuries and illnesses during the 2020 calendar year. The group completed work on a white paper titled "examining occupational safety & health administration (osha) recordkeeping data to determine trends in worker injuries and illnesses." the group is currently working on an article that will be submitted to a peer reviewed journal and designing a second study that will expand upon the findings of the first study in order to gain a better understanding of the long-term impact that covid-19 pandemic had on frontline nurses and other healthcare first-responders. Mna labor summit: road to victory was held on march 15-16, 2023. The event was held at the four-points sheraton in norwood, and it was led by mna labor educators, deb sullivan, and ron pantenaude. The summit marked a return to an in-person format focusing exclusively on labor related education and information. The two-day event focused on a variety of presentations and discussions including: unpacking the mna division roles: unleashing our collective power, labor relations, bargaining unit recognition, strategizing the big picture, and road to victory-wrap up. The event allowed staff and our members an opportunity to network and learn together in union solidarity.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Division of health & safety: the division of health & safety associate directors act as a resource, consultant, and educator for mna members, members of the nursing community, healthcare organizations and other staff on a wide variety of health & safety (h&s) related topics. The division continued to primarily focus on issues that resulted from the impact of covid-19 currently affecting nurses at the bedside. The pandemic contributed towards many current challenges and working conditions that our members encountered daily. Because of the crisis numerous issues evolved, (facility structural problems, adls, etc.) that were not reported for appropriate actions to have been initiated. H&s continues to receive communications from members daily reporting concerns in their facilities resulting from the crisis of the pandemic. Our focus remains to meet the immediate needs of the membership within the organization. For example, increase in workplace violence with reports of daily assaults on staff, hostile work environments, staffing crisis and other infrastructure health and safety issues. We continued to address the culture of safety, bullying, infectious diseases, workplace environmental exposures/hazards including the use of ppe and preventative measures, indoor air quality, respiratory protection, workers' compensation, etc.. - we participate on the massachusetts governor's executive committee 511 to continue to bring osha safety regulations to the public sector and municipal workers. Associate directors from the division have collaborated with osha to discuss the problem of workplace violence and safe patient handling. We have taken part in the ergonomic task force with dph for safe patient handling education. Mna is also involved with prevention initiatives dealing with sharps injuries among health care workers. - provided expertise and guidance to the various unions regarding health & safety concerns. - through the ongoing work with the university of massachusetts boston's institutional review board that was approved in march 2021 to study, "examining occupational safety & health administration (osha) recordkeeping data to determine trends in worker injuries & illnesses related to covid-19", three publications have been developed to date: published a white paper. "examining occupational safety & health administration (osha) recordkeeping data to determine trends in worker injuries & illnesses related to covid19, published frontline worker safety in the age of covid-19: a global perspective and published mna study: assessing osha-recordable injury and illness cases in its acute care facilities - may 2023 mass nurse advocate - developed and distributed a vaccine adverse reactions survey - developed and distributed a psychiatric crisis intervention response survey - our "code gray" policy and plan for hospitals to customize preventing workplace violence continues to be requested and distributed to both member and non-member facilities. - continued to distribute a pocket guide of educational material called: "workplace stress & trauma response information" workplace violence and prevention task force: - karen coughlin published; workplace violence: what can we do about it? - march 2023 mass nurse advocate - continued to offer recommended language for bargaining unit contracts regarding workplace violence - continued to post the "actions you should take if assaulted at work" for online access and distribution to members. - the mna task force staff continued to collect data to share with the task force members to identify and analyze trends which can lead to safer practice recommendations from the online workplace violence reporting form - a significant increase in assaults and severity continues for patients and staff. - involved with initiating legal actions across the commonwealth with various district attorney offices - the mna task force staff assisted members who were assaulted by providing support and assisting with securing c

Our coalition work was successful in early august when lgh (along with some other particularly hard-hit disproportionate share hospitals such as cha) became the largest beneficiary of a relatively large swath of new $180 million in funding in 2023. Ii. Steward healthcare a. Good samaritan medical center rns and healthcare professionals on the strength of an overwhelming strike vote in the cold of february (96% yes with 81% of all gsmc members casting ballots) made huge improvements in arguably the previously worst staffed hospital in the state. Increased wage rates and significant improvements to the already enforceable staffing grids. Conditions remain poor, but with the dramatic improvements in wages, benefits and staffing grids, the mna is actively helping to recruit rns and hcps to come to work at the hospital to take advantage of the promise of higher wages and improving conditions. B. St. Elizabeth medical center new contract in february 2023 resulting in greatly improved wages and enforceable staffing grids. C. Nashoba valley medical center in 2023 we settled a new contract with significant wage increases and staffing improvements. Iii. Beth israel lahey healh system a. Northeast hospital corporation (aka beverly and addison gilbert hospitals) a successful strike vote following a hugely successful picket in 2022, resulted in successful huge wage increase and improvement in health insurance and our winning enforceable staffing grids. B. Bi-lahey plymouth (which many still call jordan) respecting our union power, settled an early mid-contract increase in february 2023 with increased wage rates and signing bonuses. The old contract was to have expired 12/31/23. New one year-extended expiration will be 12/31/24. C. Anna jacques hospital has the single lowest wages anywhere in northeast massachusetts, and that is about to change. Our first day of bargaining is september 12, and the day before we will announce that we are taking a strike vote, which our committee has been organizing for all summer long. Our goal is to bring ajh wages ahead of the pack, big improvements in the anemic health insurance and other benefits and winning enforceable staffing grids. Iv. Mass general brigham (formerly partners) a. Newton-wellesley hospital the unit will hold committee elections and begin its prep for successor negotiations in later 2023. The current cba expires on march 31, 2024. To combat the overuse of travel rns, the committee is using its power under the cba to withhold required approval on the extension period a travel rn can work at nwh. Martha's vineyard hospital nurses have a new contract that will run through march 15, 2024. They restructured their wage scale and added across the board increases. Cooley dickinson hospital the nurses restructured the wage scale and added across the board increases. Added additional safety language and mandates the employer to inform a nurse how to file charges against any assailant. Cooley dickinson vna & hospital the nurses achieved a great new contract in 2022. There were wage increases and three new top steps (one added each year). The nurse also negotiated bonus payments to cover the increased cost of some insurance programs as well as the right to select among all insurance programs offered by the employer previously the employer offered some plans only to non-union staff. V. Cape cod healthcare a. In 2022 the two (2) cape cod vna bargaining

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 1 - ACCOUNTING METHOD:

The 990 is prepared on the same basis as the financial statements which are prepared on the modified cash basis of accounting. The financial statements of the association are presented on a modified cash basis, whereby the association's dues income is recognized when received rather than on the accrual basis of accounting. Expenses are recorded as incurred.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

There was no change in the oversight process or selection process during the tax year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The association is a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(6) of the internal revenue code and is, therefore, exempt from federal and state income tax. The association is, however, subject to federal and state taxes on its unrelated business taxable income, if any. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require the association to evaluate tax positions taken, including the position that the association qualifies as a tax-exempt organization, and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the association has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by the internal revenue service. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the association, and has concluded that as of june 30, 2023, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. The association believes it is no longer subject to examinations for years prior to june 30, 2020. The association's policy is to recognize any interest and penalties related to tax matters as an expense when incurred.
