Page 6 Part VI Section A Line 6 - Members

The MNA is directed and run by the membership with an elected board of directors and a grassroots organizational structure. With regional councils in five different regions of the state, members have an opportunity to become involved in the MNA on local issues and concerns. The MNA also provides members with an opportunity to influence nursing and other healthcare issues on a national level.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X, Line 2 - Uncertain Tax Position

The Association is a tax exempt organization under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code and is, therefore, exempt from Federal and state income tax. Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require the Association to evaluate tax positions taken, including the position that the Association qualifies as a tax-exempt organization, and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the Association has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by the Internal Revenue Service. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the Association, and has concluded that as of June 30, 2017 and 2016, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. The Association believes it is no longer subject to examinations for years prior to June 30, 2014. The Association's policy is to recognize any interest and penalties related to tax matters as an expense when paid.

IRS990/Desc0The ANCC Provider Unit is awaiting notification on reaccreditation status. The virtual site visit was held on August 11, 2017 and all members participated in the process. There was a total of 68 education programs presented by the Division with a total of 5,261 participants. On-line registration is fully implemented for all programs with the exception of the Region programs. Registration for Region programs is implemented by the Region. During the past year, topics of continuing education programs focused on issues that impact safe patient limits, clinical practice, post-traumatic stress disorder, opioid use and abuse, sports-related injuries, regulatory and legislative issues, chemical sensitivities, peer assistance, and caring for diverse patient populations including the persons from the LGBTQ community. During the course of the year three continuing education programs were made available as online offerings to members and 640 nurses took advantage of the online programs. The majority of online participants were MNA members but there were 50 nonmembers who enrolled in these programs. The Congress of Nursing Practice developed a position paper on the practice of bedside reporting. The paper is in its final stages of development and is expected to be presented to the Board of Directors at the September, 2017 meeting. The Division of Health and Safety is coordinating the development of a Position Paper on Reduction of Restraint and Seclusion Related to Staff and Patient Safety Concerns with the Congress on Health & Safety. Work Place Violence Prevention Legislation was submitted. MNA testified in support of our Workplace Violence Prevention Bill. MNA did develop and offer educational programs for PASNAP titled Workplace Violence and Just Culture and Safe Staffing: What the Registered Nurse Needs to Know to Advocate for Themselves and Their Patients. The Associate Director for the Division of Health and Safety represents the Massachusetts Nurses Association and membership by attending various educational and Public Health forums and meetings throughout the year. Many of these meetings are held monthly or quarterly. Some of the organizations and groups that Health & Safety attend are MassCosh, the Massachusetts Asthma Coalition, MDPH Hepatitis-C Coalition, MDPH Occupational Health Surveillance Program (Advisory Board Member) and a member of a National Needle stick Advisory Committee. Health & Safety is on the State Safe Patient Handling Stake Holders Group who directs the activities of the State Ergonomic Task Force. Members of the group have been invited to be members of the Governors Task Force on Worker Safety in the public sector overseen by the Department of Public Health. The consultation role for practice issues is a formal/informal process in the Division of Nursing. The Associate Directors are assigned to teams but work together for complex issues. Career Advisement continues to be the responsibility of the Nursing Division. All Nursing Division Associate Directors and the Director respond to Peer Assistant calls. In April 2017, the MNA sponsored two Educational Programs in Massachusetts for senior nursing students titled "Transition from Student to RN". The programs were held in Sturbridge and Randolph MA. 32 students participated in the Sturbridge program and 75 students participated in the Randolph program. The job market for new graduates continues to slowly widen. Career Services has responded to multiple requests throughout the year. Requests in order of priority were; obtaining a position in the still challenging professional market, returning to nursing, refresher courses, selection of a nursing program, assistance with resume development and career options, degree options, nursing scholarships and loan forgiveness. The Convention Committee completed plans for the annual convention to be held at the Sheraton in Framingham, Mass on October 12 and 13, 2017.new graduates continues to slowly widen. Career Services h
