The forest stewardship council promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. In the united states and canada, approximately 170 million acres and 4,600 companies are fsc certified.

The global mission of the fsc is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. Here in the u.s., fsc-us has distilled that mission to 'ensuring forest stewardship'. Fsc's unique system of transparent, balanced and democratic standards-setting provides an unparalleled tool for conserving and managing working forests, protecting ecosystem functions, biodiversity and threatened species, water resources and community interests while promoting economic opportunity.
