IRS990/Description0SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM AND SERVICES PROVIDED:TEAM READ PROVIDES ONE-ON-ONE READING TUTORING FOR STRUGGLING 2ND AND 3RD GRADE READERS IN 10 OF SEATTLE'S LOWEST-PERFORMING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. THE INNOVATIVE PROGRAM MODEL TAPS INTO THE SKILLS AND COMMITMENT OF TEENAGERS, TRAINING THEM TO BECOME EXPERT READING TUTORS. TUTORING PAIRS MEET AFTER SCHOOL, TWO DAYS A WEEK TO BUILD VOCABULARY, FLUENCY AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS. THE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LITERACY EXPERTS AT SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS (SPS) AND SUPPORTS ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. TEAM READ WORKS WITH DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS AND LITERACY SPECIALISTS TO IDENTIFY THOSE SCHOOLS MOST IN NEED OF ADDITIONAL LITERACY SUPPORT SERVICES OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL DAY. SECOND AND THIRD GRADE TEACHERS REFER THEIR STUDENT TO TEAM READ AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. THE TEEN READING TUTORS ARE RECRUITED FROM 15 LOCAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS. EVERY TUTOR COMPLETES A THOROUGH SCREENING AND TRAINING PROCESS, PARTICIPATING IN FIVE HOURS OF LITERACY TRAINING BEFORE THEY BEGIN WORKING WITH THEIR ELEMENTARY READER. THE CLOSE BOND THAT FORMS BETWEEN THE TEENS AND THEIR YOUNG READER LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR THE PROGRAM'S SUCCESS. PRINCIPALS REPORT THAT STUDENTS "RUN TO TEAM READ" AFTER SCHOOL FOR THE CHANCE TO SPEND TIME WITH A "COOL" TEENAGER. THE GOAL OF EVERY TUTOR IS TO HELP THEIR STUDENT IMPROVE THEIR READING SKILLS SO THEY ARE READING AT GRADE LEVEL BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM ON ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND TEENS: READING IS THE FOUNDATION FOR ALL LEARNING AND RESEARCH SUPPORTS HOW CRITICAL IT IS FOR STUDENTS TO BE READING AT GRADE LEVEL BY THE END OF THE 3RD GRADE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS. TEAM READ'S RESEARCH-BASED, RESULTS-DRIVEN MODEL ADDRESSES A PROFOUND NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE LITERACY INTERVENTION FOR STRUGGLING READERS. BY PROVIDING CHILDREN WHO ARE READING A YEAR OR MORE BELOW GRADE LEVEL WITH ONE-ON-ONE READING TUTORING BY A HIGHLY TRAINED, DEDICATED TEEN TUTOR, THESE STUDENTS BUILD KEY READING SKILLS. ON AVERAGE, 2ND GRADERS IN THE PROGRAM GAINED 1.7 GRADE LEVELS IN READING, AND 3RD GRADERS GAINED 1.47 GRADE LEVELS IN READING DURING THE PROGRAM YEAR. THEY ALSO GAINED CONFIDENCE IN READING AND DISCOVERED THAT READING CAN BE A FUN AND POSITIVE PART OF THEIR LIVES. TEAM READ'S GOAL IS FOR ALL TEAM READ STUDENTS TO BE AT GRADE LEVEL BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR SO THEY ARE POISED FOR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL AND BEYOND. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WE PARTNER WITH CONSIDER TEAM READ TO BE A KEY STRATEGY IN PROVIDING EFFECTIVE LITERACY INTERVENTIONS TO THEIR STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY. DURING THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR, TEAM READ PROVIDED 327 2ND AND 3RD GRADERS WITH ONE-ON-ONE AFTER SCHOOL LITERACY SUPPORT. TEAM READ ALSO PROVIDED MEANINGFUL WORK AND VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE FOR 485 TEENS. THESE TEENAGERS GAINED LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE, BECAME MENTORS AND LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY, AND BUILT THEIR COLLEGE AND WORK RESUMES. THE TEENS CAN WORK FOR THE PROGRAM AS VOLUNTEERS AND EARN SERVICE LEARNING HOURS TO SATISFY GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS, OR EARN HOURLY PAY (MINIMUM WAGE), OR SAVE MONEY FOR COLLEGE TUITION.APPROXIMATELY 90% OF THE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM ARE LOW-INCOME AND ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FEDERAL FREE/REDUCED PRICE LUNCH PROGRAM. FORTY PERCENT OF OUR TEEN TUTORS ARE ALSO FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES.
