IRS990/Desc0New Kitchen for Likamba Primary School Building this kitchen became our top priority for 2024 when we discovered that because the school did not have an actual kitchen, it was difficult to keep a fire burning some days and meals were not cooked. The area provided to the school cook was a patch of earth covered by a crudely assembled shed of discarded steel sheets. During the rainy season with torrential rains and gusty winds, some days it was impossible to keep the flame alive under the cauldron, and rice couldn't be cooked, and the kids didn't eat. The kids were fainting due to lack of nutrition because they weren't always getting consistent meals at home either. Getting this kitchen working has been a blessing to the school and ensures consistent preparation of food with way more efficient wood-burning ovens that use considerably less wood than the exhausting effort to keep an open flame alive throughout the day. This kitchen serves 680 children. A generous donor, Jay Wolfson and the Roaringlion Fund have pledged to cover the cost of this kitchen. By building a fully-equipped kitchen, we can ensure that students receive nutritious meals every day, improving their health, focus, and overall well-being. This project is not only about feeding students but also about fostering a better learning environment. This is where the poorest of the poor children go. And during rainy season when the roads wash out, many parents in the toughest areas don't bother sending their children to school at all. Here 5 children sit at a desk designed for 2 in classrooms with busted floors and ceilings that leak no matter how many times the roof is patched. Glass in windows is broken, and there seem to be sharp edges everywhere. Everything is gray and dusty. We discovered what the school's kitchen looks like. We started with a model classroom with our initial fundraise in early 2024 and are going room-by-room to provide the students with safe classrooms where they can learn with nice, new desks where each student has enough space. Before the fence was completed, we had a theft of piping from the newly installed sinks of the new kitchen. With the amount of materials being brought in for the school's refurbishment and the high level of extreme poverty in the surrounding areas, it became important to safeguard the new assets being added to the school. This also created a much safter environment for the children as they are now contained within an enclosed area and cannot wander off during the day as some had been known to do for a variety of reasons. And limiting who may drive onto this property with these young children is always important.

In 2024, a new kitchen was built to enable hot meals to be cooked each day for the school of over 600 students, and we refurbished most of the classrooms along with building a security fence around the school to keep uninvited people away from the children and the new assets being added to the property. We are next building toilets which will provide proper hygiene for these young children who currently only have a dirty, unattended outhouse for a restroom. The goal is to provide a safe, clean environment for the kids with hot food and clean, safe spaces so that their parents will send them to school each day.
