Mission

During 2025 the Secure Resilient Future Foundation SRFF a 501c4 social welfare organization advanced its mission to promote cybersecurity resilience consumer protection and technology sustainability through policy advocacy research and public education SRFF collaborated with national consumer organizations including Consumer Reports and US PIRG to support legislation and policy proposals requiring manufacturers to disclose software support lifecycles and address cybersecurity risks posed by unsupported products SRFF also contributed research and technical expertise to public awareness initiatives including the Electronic Waste Graveyard documenting technology products rendered insecure or unusable due to discontinued support Additionally SRFF published policy analysis and educational materials to inform policymakers and the public about cybersecurity risks associated with unsupported software and to promote more secure and sustainable technology practices

SRFFs mission is centered on advacing the public interest in a software-driven world. SRFF promotes policies and practices that facilitate meaningful cybersecurity work and advocates for secure product design as well as transparency regarding security risks, software quality and support and product resilience. In 2024, SRFF undertood several .initiatives to address pressing issues related to the cybersecurity and product resilience. That includes: + Combating ?Bricked and Abandoned Devices: As the Internet of Things (IoT) expans, many smart devices are becoming obsolete due to manufacturers discontinuing product support and turning functional devices into electronic waste. SRFF organized and led informational sessions and panel discussions at leading information security events including RSA Conference, Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) and DEF CON. + Advocacy against software tethering: On September 5, 2024, SRFF called on the Federal Trade Commission (TFC) to establish clear guidelines protecting consumers from parctices that limit device longevity and compromise cybersecurity. SRFF emphasized the importance of transparency from m manufacturers regarding the duration of software and security updates for devices. + Raising opposition to abuse of software locks to restrict device maintenance and repair: In July 2024, SRFF along with electronics refurbishers, repairers and resellers urged the FCC to address software locks that prevent refurbished devices from being fully functional. SRFF advocated for policies that support the rights of device owners and promote a sustainable, consumer-friendly marketplace. SRFF funding in 2024 came primarily via individual donors ($3894) and public fundraising campaigns ($225). Additionally, SRFF raised funds via subscriptions to Fight to Repair Newsletter (fighttorepair.news), an online publication that tracks the grassroots movement to enshrine a legal right to repair, as well as efforts by manufacturers and others to constrain product repairability and sustainability. SRFF applied funds raised via donors to help cover the costs related to our advocacy including travel and expenses related to SRFF members attending industry conferences including RSA Conference in San Francisco, DEF CON in Las Vegas and HOPE XV in Queens NY ($515). Additionally, funds raised by SRFF were used to purchase merchandise including t-shirts and stickers ($911.94) and to support business operations including website hosting, email and office productivity software ($183.75).
