Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to promote, protect, and advance the free and open source Bevy Engine and related open source projects. We coordinate and promote its continued maintenance and development, educate and train members of the general public in its usage, and conduct research and development to advance the state of the art of creating real-time applications and simulations.

Developing Open Source Application Development and Simulation Technology: In 2024 the Bevy Foundation produced three Bevy open source Bevy releases (Bevy 0.13, Bevy 0.14, and Bevy 0.15), which we released as free and open source software under the dual Apache 2.0 / MIT software license. These releases added rendering features (ex: virtual geometry, voxel global illumination, lightmaps, volumetric fog, depth of field), Entity Component System features (ex: required components, hooks, observers), animation features (animation graphs, blending), user interface features (box shadows, better text rendering, rounded UI corners, camera-driven UI), and many others. These releases were produced by hundreds of volunteers over the course of 2,882 "pull requests". Alice Cecile, the Bevy Foundation Staff Engineer we hired this year, spent approximately 70% of her time serving as a project manager (reviewing and merging pull requests) and developer (building new features and designs). Paying Alice was the foundation's one expense for this program service, so we have reported this program service's expenses as $27,143, computed as: $38,776 (The total cost of paying Alice's salary, including taxes and fees) x 0.7 (estimated amount of time she spent on this program) = $27,143. In terms of "number of persons benefited", Bevy does not employ any user tracking in our software, so finding an exact number is hard. One metric we have is how many crates.io downloads the Bevy software package has. We take a snapshot of this number once a year in August. Our last snapshot in August of 2024 had 834,415 downloads since the previous snapshot (note that users can download Bevy more than once, so this is NOT a direct count of people).-$27,143
Writing Educational Material and Training Members of the Public: The foundation produced release notes for the three Bevy releases this year, which described in detail the most important features that were added: Bevy 0.13: https://bevyengine.org/news/bevy-0-13/ Bevy 0.14: https://bevyengine.org/news/bevy-0-14/ Bevy 0.15: https://bevyengine.org/news/bevy-0-15/ The foundation also doubled the number of lines of Bevy API (application programming interface) documentation, from 32,007 lines of documentation to 63,575 lines. This documentation was produced by hundreds of volunteers via some of the 2,882 pull requests submitted (not every pull request contributed API documentation). Again, like the previous program service selection, paying Alice was our one expense this year. She spent an estimated 15% of her time on this program service. Using the same calculation as the previous section, this resulted in an estimated expense of $5,816 to the foundation. Again, in terms of "number of persons benefited", Bevy does not employ any user tracking, so we will once again provide an (over) estimate of the 834,415 downloads that occurred between "yearly snapshots" (see previous program service section)-$5,816
Educating and Running Flourishing Bevy Communities: The foundation moderated and ran our Github community, Discord community, and social media presences. The foundation board members serve as moderators in these communities. In 2024 there were 684,511 messages in the Bevy Discord and 2138 issues in the bevy repository. Again, like the previous program service selection, paying Alice was our one expense this year. She spent an estimated 15% of her time on this program service. Using the same calculation as the previous section, this resulted in an estimated expense of $5,816 to the foundation. Calculating "number of persons benefited" is challenging here, but our Discord has approximately 20,000 members, who benefit from our help channels, development discussions, and personal interactions.-$5,816
