Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is recognized by the internal revenue service as an exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The organization adopted theprovisions of fasb asc 740, the organization income taxes. As required by the uncertain taxposition guidance in fasb asc 740, the organization recognizes the financial statementbenefit of a tax position only after determining that the relevant tax authority would more likely than not sustain the position after an audit. For tax positions meeting the more likely than not threshold, the amount recognized in the financial statements is the largest benefitthat has a greater than fifty percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement with the relevant tax authority. The organization applied the uncertain tax position guidance in fasb asc 740 to all tax positions for which the statute of limitations had remained open and has not recognized any additional liability. Tax regulations within each jurisdiction are subject to interpretation of the related tax laws and regulations and require significant judgment to apply. With few exceptions, the organization's form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax is no longer subject to u.s. Federal and state examinations by tax authority for the fiscal years ended december 31, 2014 and prior.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SOCIAL, COMMUNITY, CULTURAL, CIVIC AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTMAUI COUNTY IS A CULTURALLY, SOCIALLY AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE JURISDICTION. OUR MISSION WAS EXPANDED, THROUGH A STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS IN 2012, AND REVISED IN 2015, TO INCLUDE PROJECTS THAT BUILD, NURTURE AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE PEOPLE LIVING IN OUR COMMUNITIES. THESE PROJECTS CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIAL, CULTURAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH AND POLITICAL FACTORS IMPORTANT TO CIVIC AND COMMUNITY LIFE ON ALL THE ISLANDS OF MAUI COUNTY. THESE PROJECTS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT AS THE POPULATION OF MAUI COUNTY CONTINUES TO GROW BOTH IN NUMBERS AND DIVERSITY. WE WORK WITH EMERGING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE INNOVATIVE PROJECTS, INCLUDING EVENTS, WHICH NEED A COMBINATION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FUNDING, AS WELL AS DONATIONS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC, IN ORDER TO FULFILL THEIR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.ACCOMPLISHMENT: THE 2017 MAUI UPCOUNTRY 4H LIVESTOCK & AG FAIR SAW OVER 4,500 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDING AND VISITING 45 DIFFERENT VENDOR AND ORGANIZATIONAL BOOTHS. THIS YEAR WAS NO EXCEPTION.ACCOMPLISHMENT: TEENS ON CALL YOUTH PROGRAM HAD 125 YOUTH PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS JOB SKILLS TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT PROJECTS. THERE WERE 500 TRAINING ASSIGNMENTS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY WITH 15 YOUTH OBTAINING PARTTIME OR FULL EMPLOYMENT, AS A RESULT OF THIS TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT ASSIGNMENTS.ACCOMPLISHMENT: TEENS ON CALL YOUTH PROGRAM HAD 125 YOUTH PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS JOB SKILLS TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT PROJECTS. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0NATIVE FORESTS, ECOSYSTEMS, AND HABITAT PROTECTION AND RESTORATIONTHE INDIGENOUS ECOSYSTEMS OF THE ISLANDS OF MAUI COUNTY CONTINUE TO BE COMPROMISED AND ARE IN DEMISE, DECREASING IN SIZE AND LESS ABLE TO POSITIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENVIRONMENTS AND CLIMATES SO IMPORTANT TO ISLAND LIFE. THESE PROJECTS NEED TO CONTINUE AS OUR NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA CONTRIBUTE TO HOW OUR ENVIRONMENTS AND ECOSYSTEMS ARE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO THE NURTURING OF OUR CLIMATE AND WEATHER. THESE PROJECTS ALSO NEED RESOURCES TO CONTINUE TO EDUCATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND VISITORS TO THESE ISLANDS, ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVATION, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND NATURAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT. OUR MEMBERSHIP IN THE MAUI CONSERVATION ALLIANCE (MCA) HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND AND SEEK NEW FUNDING STREAMS, AS WELL AS TO WORK WITH NEW AND EMERGING ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE CONSERVATION PROJECTS. IN 2017, WE HAVE TAKEN ON THE ROLE OF GRANTSMANSHIP COORDINATION WITH AND FOR THE MCA.ACCOMPLISHMENT: THE MAUI COASTAL DUNE RESTORATION/ EROSION CONTROL PROJECT (MCD) REPAIRED, MAINTAINED AND IMPROVED 22 INDIVIDUAL SITES SAND DUNE, NATIVE BIRD HABITATS AND NATURE SAND TRAILS IN THE SOUTH MAUI PUBLIC PARKS. THIS ALL-VOLUNTEER PROJECT, REPAIRED, MAINTAINED AND IMPROVED 5 MILES OF TRAILS, FENCING AND BEACH RAMPS IN THESE SAME PARKS. A TOTAL OF 3,200 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE COMPLETED, REPRESENTING ABOUT $34,000.00 OF IN-KIND LABOR.ACCOMPLISHMENT: THE LANA'I UNGULATE REMOVAL PROJECT ACCOMPLISHED THE REMOVAL OF DESTRUCTIVE FERAL UNGULATES FROM AN ENCLOSED, FENCED AREA ON LANA'I HALE THAT WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROTECT THE NATIVE CLOUD FOREST AND WATERSHED. WITH THE PURCHASE AND INSTALLMENT OF 83 SEMI-COVERT INFRARED CAMERAS, WITH SECURITY ENCLOSURES AND LOCKS, THE ASSESSMENT OF DEER DENSITY IN SENSITIVE LOCATIONS, HELPED NOT ONLY ERADICATION BUT ALSO DIRECTED HUNTING EFFORTS.
