Form 990, Page 1, Item B

The 2023 form 990 has been amended to reflect audited financial statements.

Form 990, Part III

Part iii, line 1 - organization's mission (continued from page 2) and conservation programs in hawaii, australia, ecuador, chile, and japan. Organization's mission (full description): pacific whale foundation's mission is to protect the ocean through science and advocacy and to inspire environmental stewardship. Our vision is to be the people's environmental organization for the protection of the world's whales, dolphins and other marine animals living wild in their natural habitat. We believe that it is essential to involve the public in our mission, and we encourage all to become a part of our global community of people who care about the future of the ocean and marine wildlife. Form 990, part iii line 4a - first accomplishment (continued from page 2) key 2023 metrics and accomplishments: research research surveys: completed 171 research vessel survey days across hawaii, ecuador, australia, and chile, resulting in 3,872 individual cetacean encounters, including 1,913 individual humpback whales identified and 156 biological samples collected. Spinner dolphin population assessment: conducted 5 line-transect surveys (covering 67 out of 656 transect lines) to determine the abundance of spinner dolphins in maui nui, in collaboration with the marine mammal research program (mmrp). False killer whales/cats tag deployment: successfully deployed the first-ever cats tagging of a false killer whale in february and again in november, gathering crucial information related to energetics, foraging rates, and targeted prey species. Scientific contributions: published eight peer-reviewed articles and contributed to one book in marine science literature, provided eight conference presentations, and submitted eight iwc reports. Form 990, part iii line 4b - second accomplishment (continued from page 2) education key 2023 metrics and accomplishments: keiki whalewatch: engaged more than 3,000 students throughout maui nui with integrated learning experiences that combined classroom instruction and field-based whale-watching. Ocean career quest: introduced 19 middle school students to marine science careers through immersive programs, nurturing future interest and commitment to ocean stewardship. Ocean camp: facilitated hands-on environmental education for 224 students in grades 2-8, focusing on interactive activities and field trips to bolster knowledge and responsibility. Form 990, part iii line 4c - third accomplishment (continued from page 2) conservation key 2023 metrics and accomplishments: reef monitoring program: launched a diving program to monitor the reef environments at mala wharf and olowalu after the maui fires. The team conducted 22 individual dives accounting for 47 transect surveys of fish, invertebrates, and coral substrates. Adopt a beach and coastal marine debris monitoring programs: engaged 563 volunteers (non-unique), cumulatively removing over 200,000 debris items in 2023, highlighting a community-focused approach to reducing plastic pollution. Go slow - whales below campaign: reinforced marine safety measures for vessels, mitigating whale collisions through partnerships and public outreach.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 2

In 2023, pacific whale foundation jump started a disaster relief program to help community members in need as a result of the lahaina wildfires.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Fire response and community outreach. In response to the august 2023 maui fires, pwf launched an emergency outreach initiative to address immediate and long-term environmental and community impacts, demonstrating its dedication to stewardship and recovery efforts. Key 2023 actions and accomplishments: supply distribution: established centralized supply hub in ma'alaea for community needs, distributed over 26,000 individual emergency supplies and 275 gallons of drinking water to affected residents to support relief efforts. Provided 397 staff hours delivering supplies and support for community hubs. Malama pono program: collaborated with local organizations to mobilize volunteers and contribute to community needs and ecosystem health including projects with hawaii wildlife fund, maui humane society and maui surfrider. The resulting program, malama pono, showcases pwf's dedication to conservation and community outreach, with a commitment to integrating traditional ecological knowledge and promoting sustainable stewardship of marine and coastal environments. Community events: hosted two for da keiki events in partnership with local organizations, engaging over 600 participants to connect families with resources, local organizations, and to promote environmental stewardship. Community cruises: organized nine cruises to offer first responders and community members a supportive space for rest and rejuvenation, fostering well-being and relief during the disaster recovery period. Emergency communications: deployed and provided service for 19 donated starlinks to provide critical communications lines for lahaina community members and organizations. Post-fire ecosystem monitoring: completed 68 beach surveys near the burn area to assess fire-related debris, conducted and eight boat-based surveys off the lahaina coast-including drone flights and marine life health assessments-to evaluate potential impacts on marine life.

Schedule D, Page 2, Part III, Line 4

The collection of artwork is focused on depicting marine life via photography, acrylic, oil paintings, and other vision media. It is designed to inspire our visitors and staff to continue to support the pacific whale's mission.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50% likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities for years 2023 and 2022. The organization's forms 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, for the years ended 2020, 2021 and 2022, are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they were filed.
