Activity 2

Aquatic feeds & nutrition program (afn program) - oi's aquatic feeds and nutrition program has as an overall goal to develop practical feeds to support sustainable food production globally, but with a more recent emphasis on hawaii and us-affiliated pacific islands. Local aquaculture and terrestrial animal production in the pacific region is limited and contributes to a very small portion of overall food supply. Imported animal products pose a major challenge to food security and food safety for these island communities. This is an especially critical issue in times of food shortages, energy crises, and global climate change. Afn research is focused on identifying, defining, and testing locally available plant and animal by-products for their nutritional composition and bioavailability in terrestrial and aquatic animal feeds. Afn research also focuses on defining nutrient requirements of local aquaculture species which are cultured in hawaii and us-affiliated pacific islands, including pacific threadfin (moi) and pacific white shrimp. Animal feeds research includes processing research to produce nutritionally complete diets for evaluation, and testing the effectiveness of feeds produced on a commercial pilot scale through collaboration with university and commercial partners. Accomplishments for the past year include the development of standard research diet formulations for pacific threadfin (moi), pacific white shrimp, longfin amberjack (kahala), opihi (limpet), sea urchin (uni), and abalone (enzo). A 2-day workshop on biofuels co-product and algae utilization in aquatic feeds was held at oi's oceanic learning center where leaders of the commercial biofuels and algae production industries in hawaii presented their work. In addition, there were live demonstrations of aquatic feeds made from these co-products.

Activity 3

Center for tropical and subtropical aquaculture (ctsa) - the center for tropical and subtropical aquaculture was established in 1986 to promote sustainable commercial aquaculture of tropical and subtropical species within the us and the us-affiliated pacific islands. Ctsa supported 24 projects during the period of 7/1/2011 to 6/30/2012, including six new projects and seven projects that reached completion. Results have provided valuable information on the potential culture of yellow tang in the region, and improved the existing culture technology of copepod and pacific threadfin (moi). In addition, technology to produce value-added half-pearls has been improved and transferred throughout micronesia, as has sea cucumber culture technology. Two new feeds were developed using local products; tilapia feed was made from locally available ingredients in american samoa, and a shrimp maturation diet was made from tuna roe in guam. Finally, new information on disease status for several species has facilitated better regional disease management. For the past 26 years, ctsa has funded 237 projects addressing national aquaculture priorities, information dissemination, marketing and economics, development of new technologies, and demonstration and adaptation of known technologies.
