Mission and Program Overview

Major Activities

Activity 2
Aquatic feeds & nutrition program (afn program) - oi's aquatic feeds and nutrition program has as an overall goal to develop practical feeds to support sustainable food production globally, but with a more recent emphasis on hawaii and us-affiliated pacific islands. Local aquaculture and terrestrial animal production in the pacific region is limited and contributes to a very small portion of overall food supply. Imported animal products pose a major challenge to food security and food safety for these island communities. This is an especially critical issue in times of food shortages, energy crises, and global climate change. Afn research is focused on identifying, defining, and testing locally available plant and animal by-products for their nutritional composition and bioavailability in terrestrial and aquatic animal feeds. Afn research also focuses on defining nutrient requirements of local aquaculture species which are cultured in hawaii and us-affiliated pacific islands, including pacific threadfin (moi) and pacific white shrimp. Animal feeds research includes processing research to produce nutritionally complete diets for evaluation, and testing the effectiveness of feeds produced on a commercial pilot scale through collaboration with university and commercial partners. Accomplishments for the past year include the development of locally made diet formulations for abalone (enzo), opihi (limpet), tilapia, and pacific threadfin (moi). In collaboration with a local company, oi successfully identified the active compounds in biofuel co-products, which are active in killing apple snails, an invasive production. In addition, oi also investigated the potential use of local ingredients for aquatic and animal feed production. A local ingredient nutritional database is projected to be established in 2 years.
Activity 3
Center for tropical and subtropical aquaculture (ctsa) - the center for tropical and subtropical aquaculture was established in 1986 to promote sustainable commercial aquaculture of tropical and subtropical species within the us and the us-affiliated pacific islands. Ctsa supported 25 projects during the period from 7/1/2012 to 6/30/2013, including six new projects and nine projects that reached completion. Results have provided valuable information on the potential culture of freshwater pacu in hawaii, and coral grouper in guam. In addition, tilapia populations in hawaii have been classified using dna-based identification tools. New knowledge about the disease fno, which greatly affects tilapia culture in hawaii and the region, has been gained and shared with industry stakeholders. Disease mitigation efforts have increased, and regional biosecurity and diagnostic surveillance have been improved. Aquaponics technology has been transferred to interested parties and commerical farms have received research assistance to address production problems. Technicians from several pacific islands have been trained in marine hatchery finfish technololgy, and a moi hatchery manual has been produced and distributed. The ctsa extension agent transferred sea cucumber and pearl-oyster technology throughout micronesia. Finally, under the last year of the praise project, aquaculture information was disseminated to industry stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, and students. For the past 27 years, ctsa has funded 243 projects addressing national aquaculture priorities, information dissemination, marketing and economics, development of new technologies, and demostration and adaption of known technologies.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0AQUATIC FEEDS & NUTRITION PROGRAM (AFN PROGRAM) - OI'S AQUATIC FEEDS AND NUTRITION PROGRAM HAS AS AN OVERALL GOAL TO DEVELOP PRACTICAL FEEDS TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION GLOBALLY, BUT WITH A MORE RECENT EMPHASIS ON HAWAII AND US-AFFILIATED PACIFIC ISLANDS.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0CENTER FOR TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL AQUACULTURE (CTSA) - THE CENTER FOR TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL AQUACULTURE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1986 TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE COMMERCIAL AQUACULTURE OF TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL SPECIES WITHIN THE US AND THE US-AFFILIATED PACIFIC ISLANDS.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0(1) FINFISH PROGRAM - WITH THE RISING WORLD-WIDE DEMAND FOR SEAFOOD, COMBINED WITH THE THREATENED NATURE OF MARINE ECOSYSTEMS AND NATURAL FISH STOCKS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THERE IS A COMPELLING NEED TO FARM MARINE FISH SPECIES RATHER THAN HARVEST THEM FROM THE WILD. OI'S FINFISH PROGRAM IS WORKING TO DEVELOP CORE TECHNOLOGIES IN BROODSTOCK, LIVE FEEDS, AND HATCHERY-BASED PRODUCTION METHODS FOR MARINE FINFISH SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE WARM TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL WATERS OF HAWAII AND US-AFFILIATED PACIFIC ISLANDS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES USING NATIVE SPECIES TO REDUCE PRESSURE ON WILD POPULATIONS WHILE INCREASING MARINE RESOURCES BOTH FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION AND TO INCREASE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE GLOBAL AQUARIUM TRADE. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING SEED STOCK TO LOCAL INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS IN HAWAII, THIS LAST YEAR SAW MAJOR ADVANCES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL HATCHERY TECHNOLOGIES USING A LOCALLY ISOLATED ZOOPLANKTON, KNOWN AS A COPEPOD, TO REAR CHALLENGING CORAL REEF FISH SPECIES. USING THIS TECHNOLOGY, OI'S FINFISH PROGRAM ALSO MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN THE REARING OF THE YELLOW TANG, THE MOST HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER HAWAIIAN REEF FISH, AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE PRESENT RELIANCE ON WILD COLLECTION.(2) EDUCATION / TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER - OI SPECIALIZES IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY THROUGH TRAINING FOR AQUA FARMERS, AQUACULTURE RESEARCHERS, AND THOSE LOOKING TO START AQUACULTURE. OI TRAINING COURSES ARE OFFERED IN A WIDE RANGE OF AQUACULTURE PRACTICES.
