Mission

To provide support and advocacy for girls and young women involved with the juvenile justice system.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Advocacygirls & gangs advocates to eliminate gender bias and bring awareness to issues facing young women involved with the juvenile justice system. We collaborate with several community partners including the advisory boards of the violence prevention coalition and the camps scott/scudder pilot school committee. We supported the creation of the community-based gang intervention model. We assisted with the production of camp scott lock-up, a documentary on girls in the juvenile justice system, which was awarded the national council on crime and delinquency pass (prevention for a safer society award) in 2001 for "excellence in communicating the complex problems about crime to the american people" and was shown on mtv in 2001. Our latest advocacy project focuses on convening a community workgroup to develop promising practices for law enforcement in 2012 and hosting our first girls & gangs summit in february 2013.
Activity 3
During the year, girls and gangs provided re-entry services to approximately 300 girls.

THESE SIX-MONTH WEEKLY EDUCATIONAL SERIES ADDRESS THE ISSUES MOST PERTINENT TO GIRLS RELEASED FROM CAMP OR JUVENILE HALL. TOPICS INCLUDE ANGER MANAGEMENT, JOB READINESS/FINANCIAL LITERACY, AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH. SEEKING OUR UNLIMITED LIVES (S.O.U.L) IS A COMPONENT OF MOVING FORWARD THAT EXPOSES GIRLS TO THE EXPRESSIVE ARTS. PARENTS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT GROUPS THAT ARE INTENDED TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION WITH THEIR DAUGHTERS.CASE MANAGEMENTA MINIMUM OF 12 MONTHS OF INTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO GIRLS WHO ARE SCHEDULED TO ENROLL IN MENTORING. GIRLS RECEIVE INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION AND ARE REFERRED TO COUNSELING, HOUSING, MEDICAL SERVICES, EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AND ANY OTHER SERVICE NECESSARY.MENTORINGTHE MENTORING PROGRAM PROVIDES 1:1 GENDER SPECIFIC MENTORING WITH GIRLS, AGES 14-18, INVOLVED WITH THE LA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PROBATION. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES STRUCTURED, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH ADULT VOLUNTEERS WHO OFFER THE GIRLS GUIDANCE, SUPPORT, AND ENCOURAGEMENT AIMED AT DEVELOPING PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIORS AND COMPETENCIES.
