Mann - chairman and ceo of minimed; chairman and founder of several other companies; and prominent entrepreneur in the field of biomedical technology - to establish a university-affiliated organization devoted to research, development, and commercialization of new biomedical technologies to improve human health and well-being. As a result of discussions between mr. Mann and former president steven b. Sample of the university of southern california, the institute was established and became affiliated with the university of southern california in 1998. Funding for the institute is provided through a gift of $112 million from alfred e. Mann and the alfred e. Mann foundation for biomedical research. The mission of ami-usc is to conduct innovative biomedical research and to foster the development and commercialization of biomedical devices and other biomedical technologies. Ami-usc collaborates with the usc faculty to identify, validate, develop, and transition to private industry new concepts for use in promoting public health. Its aim is to move promising new technology from the idea stage to successful commercialization in a short period of time. Ami-usc provides research opportunities for usc faculty and graduate students to support the usc goal of increasing knowledge for the public good. It also collaborates with noted clinicians and researchers at other institutions as appropriate. Ami-usc also supports a series of symposia in selected areas in which medical device technology has a strong established or potential role in the treatment of an economically important category of disorders.”
