DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Musical Theatre Guild (MTG) began in January 1995. A group of 14 actors and singers met to create a guild for musical theatre artists, a forum where they can showcase their talents and present seldom-produced musicals at homes. From 1997-2013, five concert stage readings were presented to the public each season on a regular basis and MTG began to receive accolades from Southern California's theatrical press. In 2006, MTG received the LA Drama Critics Circle's Margaret Harford Award for "sustained excellence in theatre".The Guild's artists are a diverse group of all ages and ethnicities, and participation from a full range of cultural groups is actively encouraged. MTG artists are all professional performers, members of Actors' Equity Association, working together as a repertory company. The Musical Theatre Guild also performed 5 performances for 2013-14 Season. (Wonderful Town, Death Takes a Holiday, Ruthless and City of Angels). The total audience was around 400 paid viewers per performance.MTG is committed to reaching young audiences, in order to delight and educate them about this unique art form. In "The History of the Musical Theatre" a cast of Broadway veterans takes students on a musical journey through the twentieth century. "From the Page to the Stage" is a newer show illustrating how great literary works can be the source and inspiration for musicals. Both shows are produced for the Music Center Education Department and offered by LA Cultural Affairs grants to city schools and high populations of newcomers to this country. The Musical Theatre Guild has performed 16 performances for students at 8 schools. The average audience was 200 students per show for 2013.Approximately 1,050 elementary school students see these shows, and teachers receive and pre and post show lessons complying with California Theatre Arts standards. High school students from diverse areas of LA County are invited to attend evening performances at the Alex Theatre and discuss theatre with guest artists who visit their drama classes.$91,715-
