Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To empower society's most vulnerable youth to develop positive and self-sustaining lives by igniting their passion through Engaged Education, and to serve as a model for systemic change and social justice in education.

Major Activities

By closely partnering with the lennox school district, the foundation looks to provide integrated and enhanced programs focused on improving students' academic performance critical time frames on the education spectrum; by providing counseling to elementary school students who are dealing with severe trauma; and by providing classes and resources to help families with parenting their children. As we continue to work in lennox and partner with the community our goal is to create an opportunity for all students in the community to receive a quality high school education that prepares them for college.
Activity 3
New roads for new visions:with over 30,000 juvenile offenders incarcerated in three juvenile halls and eighteen residential treatment centers (camps), los angeles county juvenile justice system stands alone as one of the largest detention systems in the country. According to california's division of juvenile justices, 70% of youth paroled from its institutions are rearrested within two years.new roads for new visions was created in 2002 by the new visions foundation as an alternative response to this negative cycle of incarceration. Located at probation camp david gonzales in the malibu mountains, new roads for new visions has served more than 600 male probation youth since the program's inception. The program provides both effective in-camp educational resources and re-entry supportive services for 50 male probationers, ages 14-17 each year. -in-camp: participants attend classes to enhance their education, social skills and coping skills. -re-entry: new roads for new visions begins working with probation participants 60 days prior to their release from camp and continues to work with them for up to six months and/ or until they successfully complete their terms of probation.the statistical outcomes cited below tell just part of the story of hundreds of boys whose lives have been transformed due to the education that was provided, the hope was restored, and the positive alternatives to which they were carefully guided. -recidivism: the recidivism rate for youth participating in the program is 5.1% which is far below studies of similar populations. A 2002 oregon youth authority study found that 40% of its youth were re incarcerated after one year of release. -educational enhancements: 171 participants have taken and passed the ged exam representing a 81% passing rate!
