Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Educare's mission is to inspire and empower young people to become responsible citizens, compassionate leaders, and to live their dreams. Current programs are designed to empower disadvantaged, at-risk students to achieve excellence in personal, social and academic pursuits through strengthening individual students and their adult support network. The foundation receives funding from individual contributions, federal grants, and other organizational grants.

Major Activities

Activity 2
For the past five years, EduCare has worked with LAUSD/Beyond the Bell and two other citywide agencies (arc and !Mpact People) to develop a successful leadership campaign that is now nurturing core student leadership teams at 42 LAUSD high schools and 12 middle schools. The Take Action Leadership Campaign includes training and coaching high school and middle school leadership teams to run civic events such as "Denim Day" (anti-violence against women), "Kick-Butts Day" (smoking cessation) and arts (dance, music, art, poetry) competitions on their campuses, as well as providing leadership training, scholarship opportunities, and camping weekends for these student leadership teams.
Activity 3
The ACE (Achievement and Commitment to Excellence) Program is EduCare's integrated student success, youth empowerment and character building program, which successfully teaches students the additional 3 R's-Respect, Resiliency and Responsibility. The ACE Program is designed to empower disadvantaged students to achieve excellence in personal, social and academic pursuits through strengthening individual students and their adult support networks. The objectives of the ACE Program are for student participants to: 1. Experience greater self-worth and motivation; 2. Identify and enhance their unique talents; 3. Develop skills for decision-making and problem-solving as it relates to both school and personal life; 4. Gain awareness in regarding mistakes as learning opportunities; 5. Recognize and reform negative attitudes that continually interfere with creating personal and academic success; 6. Learn teambuilding and conflict resolution skills as they develop the ability to use conflict in a positive rather than destructive way; and 7. Develop greater empathy towards others. EduCare's ACE programming includes the ACE Student Success Programs, ACE Professional Development Workshops, and EduCare Parenting Workshops.

IRS990/Description0EduCare currently provides and manages after school programs in ten Los Angeles Unified School District ("LAUSD") high schools (Bell H.S., Downtown Magnets H.S., Jordan H.S., Lincoln H.S., Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, San Fernando H.S., Sun Valley H.S., Sylmar H.S., Washington Prep H.S. and West Adams Prep H.S.), providing positive alternatives to dropping out and gang involvement. Each school day over 1,500 EduCare program students participate, at their school sites, in a full menu of academic, enrichment and physical recreation after school classes and clubs. EduCare's after school programs provide academic assistance, leadership, creative and physical outlets for students while providing the opportunity to learn new skills. Students themselves at each of the high school campuses select, create and even help teach many of the programs offered. Tutoring and homework assistance, dance, intramural sports, robotics, journalism, culinary arts, graphic design, rock band, academic decathlon, computer labs, open gym, foreign language instruction, CAHSEE/SAT support, leadership clubs and college readiness are just some of the offerings available to students. EduCare incorporates other community-based organizations' programs into the after school program curriculum, so that the after school effort can more fully utilize valuable, local resources. After school programming keeps at-risk students on-campus, active and productive in a safe environment. DURING THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR AN APPROXIATE 15,000 LAUSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN EDUCARE'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. EVALUATIONS CONDUCTED BY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CONSULTANTS ("ERC"), LAUSD/BTB'S EVALUATOR, INDICATED THE FOLLOWING FOR THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR: * STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN EDUCARE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATED AT A RATE OF 87.8% VERSUS THE GRADUATION RATE OF 65.1% FOR NON-EDUCARE STUDENTS. THIS IS A DIFFERENCE OF NEARLY 23%. * STUDENTS ATTENDING AT LEAST 30 DAYS OF EDUCARE'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS WERE 20% MORE LIKELY TO ACHIEVE 96% REGULAR SCHOOL DAY ATTENDENCE THAN THEIR PEERS WHO DID NOT ATTEND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. * STUDENTS ATTENDING EDUCARE'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS ACHIEVED HIGHER CALIFORNIA STANDARDS TEST SCORES IN ENGLISH AND MATH THAN THEIR PEERS WHO DID NOT ATTENT AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. * STUDENTS ATTENDING EDUCARE'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS WERE 12% MORE LIKELY TO PASS THE CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE) FOR ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ARTS IN THE 10TH GRADE, AND 13% MORE LIKELY TO PASS THE CAHSEE FOR MATH IN THE 10TH GRADE THAN THEIR PEERS WHO DID NOT ATTEND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. BEYOND THE BELL AND ERC NOTED EDUCARE'S PROGRAMS AS EXEMPLARY AMONG HIGH SCHOOL PROVIDERS. EDUCARE'S PROGRAMS WERE ALSO RECOGNIZED BOTH NATIONALLY AND STATEWIDE IN 2012 AS: * A BEST PRACTICE/DROPOUT PREVENTION BY AFTERSCHOOL ALLIANCE (D.C.) * A BEST PRACTICE IN SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR OUR ACE PROGRAMS BY LEARNING IN AFTERSCHOOL (LIAS) GROUP (SAN FRANCISCO) IN ADDITION TO THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS, EDUCARE WAS FURTHER RECOGNIZED IN DECEMBER 2012 AS STU SEMIGRAN, EDUCARE'S PRESIDENT, WAS A RECIPIENT OF THE 2012 HUMANITARIAN AWARD BY THE DAVID CHOW HUMANITARIAN AWARD FOUNDATION FOR HIS WORK IN EDUCATION AND SERVING YOUTH.
