In LA, elementary schools are all asphalt and locked off. This safe space is evenly dispersed yet underutilized. We 'green' asphalt playgrounds and get them open to the public as park space when school is not in session (weekends and summers). We opened two new parks in January 2012, and maintained them with a jobs program for local at-risk young adults. The new park sites led to an almost immediate drop in obesity rates among the children. We started five more potential park sites near downtown LA through community input and design. |

Each development is a rival gang area all feeding into one middle school. When the kids get to Markham Middle School, clashes based on gang alliances lead to high rates of truancy, vandalism and violence. In partnership with the city and county recreation departments and the police dept, PFP leads a program that builds friendships across neighborhoods by creating sports teams that mix rival areas on the same team. In addition to sports activities, the program includes youth leadership development and safe transportation to insure participation. |
