MISSION: tO CREATE ACCESS TO SAFE AND VIBRANT PLAY SPACES TO UNDERSERVED LOS ANGELES NEIGHBORHOODS BY (1) UNLOCKING SCHOOLYARDS ON WEEKENDS TO CREATE COMMUNITY SCHOOL PARKS (CSP), (2) EMPOWERING COMMUNITITES AND (3) ADVANCING INNOVATIVE LOCAL JOINT-USE POLICIES. VISION - A LOS ANGELES WHERE EVERY CHILD AND FAMILY HAS A SAFE PARK WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE. VALUES PLAY, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, SAFETY, PUBLIC SPACE ACCESS, COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT AND JOINT-USE.

Community School Parks - Dense, low income neighborhoods most in need of parks generally have no clean land left to build on. In LA, elementary schools are all asphalt and locked off. This safe space is evenly dispersed yet underutilized. We 'green' asphalt playgrounds and get them open to the public as park space when school is not in session (weekends and summers). We opened two new parks in January 2012, and maintained them with a jobs program for local at-risk young adults. The new park sites led to an almost immediate drop in obesity rates among the children. We started five more potential park sites near downtown LA through community input and design.

IRS990/Description0One Watts Program: Serves low income boys and girls (ages 10-14) in the Watts housing developments. Each development is a rival gang area all feeding into one middle school. When the kids get to Markham Middle School, clashes based on gang alliances lead to high rates of truancy, vandalism and violence. In partnership with the city and county recreation departments and the police dept, PFP leads a program that builds friendships across neighborhoods by creating sports teams that mix rival areas on the same team. In addition to sports activities, the program includes youth leadership development and safe transportation to insure participation.

In LA, it's only 33%. We add new park space in dense low-income neighborhoods through creative solutions and we make existing parks safer through intervention programs and safe passage work. We give kids a place to play.
