Mission

Step up on second street delivers compassionate support to people experiencing serious mental health issues, and people who are experiencing chronic homelessness, to help them recover, stabilize, and integrate into the community. Through dynamic partnerships, we provide positive social and learning environments, vocational training, permanent supportive housing opportunities, and recovery services to empower individuals to cultivate lives of hope and dignity. We exercise innovative leadership and advocacy to increase public understanding, support, and acceptance of all people living with serious mental health issues.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Field clinical and full service youth:intensive services programsthe department of mental health funds important full service programs provided at step up on second. These include field capable clinical services (fccs), full service partnership (fsp), therapeutic rehabilitation program (trp), full service programs for transitional aged youth (fsptay), and the client run center. Field capable clinical services (fccs): fccs provides comprehensive, community-based treatment for adults affected by severe and persistent mental illness. This intensive case management program targets individuals with an intended outcome of reducing the need for psychiatric hospitalization. Fccs is designed to provide highly individualized services in a team-based environment. Services are designed to be comprehensive and multi-disciplinary and are tailored to the needs of the client. Full service partnership (fsp): the full service partnership (fsp) is a program funded under mental health services act (prop 63) specifically targeting individuals who are homeless and affected by a serious mental illness. Step up on second provides fsp intensive case management programs and support for adults in our s.t.e.p. Program (steps toward empowering people ) and for transitional aged youth (18-25). Fsp services are available to individuals demonstrating extended periods of homelessness, long-term institutionalization, multiple acute hospitalizations, or family dependence. Both fsp programs have specific criteria for enrollment based on an individual's history, current level of functioning, and whether or not they are accessing appropriate levels of mental health services. Fsp guidelines are established by the county and state, and the members/staff ratio is 12:1. Therapeutic rehabilitation program (trp): trp provides general outpatient services, medication support, therapy, case management, and benefits establishment. This is a non-mhsa (prop 63) dmh county funded program located at step up on second's main site. Full service partnership transitional aged youth (fsptay): fsptay provides general outpatient services, medication support, therapy, case management, and benefits establishment to transitional aged youth.
Activity 3
Advocacy and housing stabilization:some 40% of members of step up on second struggle with homelessness. Step up on second provides services to assist individuals who are homeless because of the effects of a mental illness. These services include: * housing * housing assistance * laundry facilities * shower facilities * mail pickup * groups * meals serious mental illness is at the root of homelessness for many. Because homelessness is a significant impediment to recovery, step up on second assists individuals in moving from the street into permanent supportive sro home units: step up on second, step up on fifth, and daniel's village, and in the near future step up on vine.
