IN 2018, CWD ISSUED TWO INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS INTO ELECTRICITY AND OIL INDUSTRY INFLUENCES ON ENERGY POLICY IN CALIFORNIA AND LOS ANGELES. ONE REPORT EXPOSED AND HELPED DEFEAT EFFORTS BY INVESTOR-OWNED UTILITIES AND WALL STREET FORCES TO MERGE CALIFORNIA INTO A WESTERN REGIONAL POWER MARKET THAT WOULD HAVE SUBJECTED RATEPAYERS TO MARKET SPECULATION AND DERAILED CALIFORNIA'S TRANSITION AWAY FROM FOSSIL FUELS. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)CWD ALSO INVESTIGATED OVERSIGHT AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR LOCAL UTILITIES IN CALIFORNIA, INCLUDING A REPORT ON THE FAILURE OF THE LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND POWER TO PROTECT RATEPAYERS FROM OVERBILLING AND UNREASONABLE TREATMENT. CWD EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE NEED TO LIMIT FOSSIL FUEL SUPPLIES, INCLUDING CURBING OIL DRILLING AND LIMITING FOSSIL FUEL-POWERED ELECTRIC PLANTS. CWD LAUNCHED AN INTERACTIVE ONLINE MAP DOCUMENTING OIL AND GAS WELL PERMITTING STATEWIDE, SLOWING THE RATE OF WELL APPROVAL SIGNIFICANTLY BY THE GOVERNOR'S LAST YEAR IN OFFICE. CWD ALSO EDUCATED THE MEDIA AND PUBLIC ABOUT THE UTILITIES' RESPONSIBILITY FOR CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES. THAT WORK FORESTALLED EFFORTS BY THE INVESTOR-OWNED UTILITIES TO ESCAPE RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPENSATE HOMEOWNERS FOR WILDFIRE DAMAGE. IN 2018, CWD ISSUED OVER 100 NEWS RELEASES IN OUR FOUR PROGRAM AREAS AND GENERATED HUNDREDS OF NEWS STORIES ON THESE TOPICS THAT APPEARED ON STATE AND NATIONAL TELEVISION AND RADIO PROGRAMS, AND IN PRINT AND ONLINE NEWS OUTLETS.
