Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The review of the 990 is a multi-step process:1.the financial statements, which are audited by independent certified public accountants, are a source document for the 990. Senior management and the independent auditors present a draft of the audited statements to the audit committee. The chair of the audit committee along with the executive director then present the financial statements to the full board for acceptance.2.senior management presents and reviews a draft of the 990 to the board of trustees internal wellbeing committee. Additional review and trustee education is provided by a board member with extensive experience in 990 preparation.3.the draft of the 990 is distributed to the full board, and all trustees have the opportunity to review and comment before the 990 is finalized.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 1A: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, O

In conformity with the practice followed by many museums, cultural resources purchased by or donated to the museum are not capitalized in the statement of financial position. All ancestors (human remains) are subject to the policy on curation of human remains which prohibits their public display without the consent of descendent communities. Additionally, appropriate stewardship requires extensive, ongoing, in-depth consultation with descendent communities to learn about proper cultural care while in storage and understand the appropriate use of items in exhibits, programming, and research projects. These consultation activities are also designed to support the museums colonial pathways policy which paves the way for the return of any cultural resource that came into the museums possession by way of a colonial pathway.the museum is not presently purchasing cultural resources. However, when items have been purchased in the past they have been recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired, or in temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the net assets used to purchase the items are restricted by the donor. Contributed cultural resources are excluded from the financial statements. When proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are received, they are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.

Part III, Line 4: Description of organization'S collections and how it furthers its purpose.

The museum is san diegos only institution dedicated to anthropology and archaeology and has distinguished itself nationally with its groundbreaking decolonizing work which prioritizes the voices of native american and indigenous communities in the stewarding of cultural resources.

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Interest from the endowment funds are used for general operations of the museum, unless otherwise restricted.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Museum is exempt from federal income tax pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is also exempt from state income tax. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued Accounting Standards Codification No. 740-10, Accounting for Uncertainties in Income Taxes, which sets a minimum threshold for financial statement recognition of the benefit of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The Museum has reviewed its positions for all open tax years and has determined that it has no uncertain tax positions requiring accrual or disclosure.
