“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Launched in September 2015, Express Yourself! is an exciting, unique afterschool program where girls can explore artistic storytelling and self-expression through creative and mixed media arts. This program allows girls to express their cultural and gendered experiences that often go unheard. In this program, girls participate in group discussions and complete an art project utilizing a variety of mediums, and explore creative writing, such as poetry and storytelling. Invited artists facilitate workshops on photography, film-making, mixed media, silkscreening, painting, sculpture, glass and wood work, jewelry making, folk art, and more. Other activities include field trips to museums and cultural arts centers, viewing local community-created artwork, and visiting various art schools and programs at local colleges to introduce girls to the options for pursuing higher education and a career in the arts. Because arts are so underfunded in public schools, the girls the Organization serve lack opportunities not only to see, but also to create art. The majority of girls who participate in Express Yourself! are from low-income families who do not have the financial resources to pay for extra-curricular activities such as art lessons. These families frequently also lack knowledge of how to access the many cultural resources that Los Angeles has to offer. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Senior iPad Classes & Adult Computer Classes classes allow seniors to expand their worldview and improve their quality of life by learning how to navigate apps such as Skype, Google Maps, photo sharing, email, online banking, and local library applications. Not only do seniors learn how to use technology to make their lives easier, but the social isolation many of them may experience is decreased through the use of social media. Adult Computer Classes provide un-and under-employed adults with the skills they need to obtain living wage employment. Adults learn basic computer skills, including Windows 10, Microsoft Office Suite, safe internet browsing, privacy protection, online job search, resume building, and job skills workshops with representatives from employment agencies. Participants receive a certificate of completion with the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce upon completion. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Typing Certification tests are provided by the Organization. Job seekers can schedule an appointment at the Organization to test their typing skills and will receive a certificate with their word-per-minute speed. This certificate serves as proof of typing ability for jobs requiring such skills for employment. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: The Talking the Talk series brings the community together to discuss current hot button issues and strive to come up with solutions for our communities in need. These moderated discussions allow individuals to see different viewpoints on given topics, find like-minded individuals, learn how to get involved, and have a safe space to discuss their point of view or experience. Forum topics have included Law Enforcement and Racial Profiling, Homophobia and LGBTQ violence, Islamophobia, Gun Violence, Human Trafficking, and Immigrant Rights.”
