Organization's history since 1998, each one reach one (eoro) has remained dedicated to its mission to divert incarcerated youth from a life in prison to become productive community members through mentor-based performing arts and academic tutoring programs. Each one reach one received the new american community award from the national council on crime and delinquency in 1999, and was chosen as one of thirty-six "extraordinary organizations that transform lives and strengthen communities" by the san francisco foundation in 2007. Eoro helped author and pass ab622 in 2008, which lowered the general education development testing (ged) age from 18 to 17, affording incarcerated youth the opportunity to receive a ged. The president's committee on the arts and the humanities, nationally recognized eoro as one of 50 semi-finalists of 459 nationwide nominations for the 2010, 2013, 2014, national arts and humanities youth program awards. In 2011, eoro received the san francisco office of economic and workforce development's first annual outstanding workforce partnership award, in collaboration with the youth guidance improvement committee. Over the past decade, we have evolved into a unique non-profit that organizes the community to participate in diversion programs serving incarcerated youth. Our mentor-based programs annually engage over 100 community members in the juvenile justice system as individual mentors, tutors, actors, and painters while promoting cooperation and collaboration among the systems various components. Population served the realities youth in the system intensifies every decade and each one reach one strives to provide programs that meet the educational needs of these youth. Eoro programs serve male and female, incarcerated youth, 14 to 18 years of age in san mateo, santa clara and san francisco counties over 75% of the youth we serve come from low-income families, often with histories of physical/emotional abuse and neglect, gun violence, incarceration, and/or substance abuse. Many reside in single parent households, or are former/current participants in the foster care system. A significant number have undetected learning disabilities, as well as a history of attendance problems and academic failure in traditional school settings. A disproportionate number of students are deficient in reading and mathematics. Most of the youth served by adapt are performing below their expected grade levels. In san francisco county, the majority of the detained youth are african american. Almost 80% of eoro program participants are low-income youth of color, and many reside in single parent households, and are former or current foster youth. Most are alarmingly deficient in earned academic credits, and are close to aging out of the state-mandated public education system without having earned a high school diploma.”
“Counties. "a dream and a plan for tomorrow (adapt) is the only after-school facilitated study hall program inside youth detention facilities in the bay area addressing the special academic needs of incarcerated youth providing them the opportunity to obtain their ged while detained. In adapt's tutoring component, youth work one-on-one with academic tutors/mentors to pursue a general education diploma (ged) as well as providing post-release links to community resources that assist them to identify job training and employment opportunities before they are released. Over 989 youth have participated in the program. As a result of these services, 39% of those youth were able to complete ged tests and 27% were successful (all five of the necessary examines) in passing the california state ged prior to release. An additional122 youth successfully completed at least three of five required ged tests while detained and were linked with outside partners to complete their ged upon their release from custody. "playwriting workshops has enabled over 859 detained youth to work one-on- one with a theater professional to write an original, one-act play as the youth examine their life choices as well as their attitudes, opinions and values. Each playwriting workshop concludes with a staged reading of the plays by professional actors before a live audience comprising the youth's parents, peers, teachers, caseworkers, and invited members of the public. Facilitated by a case manager, the program consists of classes and activities on topics of teen pregnancy prevention, self-esteem and body image, budgeting, employment, relationships and more. "hiv/std prevention program, keeping it safe (kis) for boys and healthy choices for girls is an 8-week series program that offers youth the opportunity to learn how to recognize concepts that would have typically been provided by traditional familial role models including defining healthy, respectful personal relationships, recognizing the importance of pursuing hiv prevention skills, and the identification with discussion on the effects of potential risks associated with sexual intimacy such as, hiv/aids, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases (std). Over 1,167 youth have successfully completed these programs. "advocacy and collaboration with the various components of the juvenile justice system, school districts and institutional staff to provide innovative programs that improve outcomes for detained youth and better coordination among the system's various components. Using the arts and education, each one reach one is transforming the lives of youth behind bars to assist them on the path to becoming successful adults and in breaking the cycle of violence that entraps so many of their peers. Each one reach one's programs provides support for detained kids by providing them with a voice to express their pain, and unearth their hopes and dreams, and to re-connect to an education that will offer a real academic outcome and vital life skills for success. By working one-on-one with these at-risk kids, we help them to leverage the detained time so that they can achieve important artistic, educational and personal goals. Many see for the first time that their futures can hold possibilities beyond a life in prison. Our team feels strong, inspired and motivated in spite of all the economic challenges we are all facing. EACH ONE REACH ONE CURRENTLY PROVIDES FIVE CORE PROGRAMS THAT HAVE REACHED MORE THAN 2,800 INCARCERATED YOUTH IN OVER EIGHT DETENTION FACILITIES AND COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOLS IN SAN MATEO, SAN FRANCISCO AND SANTA CLARA COUNTIES. EORO BELIEVES THAT YOUTH BEHIND BARS ARE CHILDREN, FIRST AND FOREMOST; THAT ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING THROUGH THE CREATIVE ACT OF PLAYWRITING, PAINTING, ACADEMIC TUTORING AND LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS PROVIDES THE BEST WAY TO POSITIVELY INFLUENCE AND CHANGE THE IMAGE THAT BOTH INCARCERATED YOUTH AND SOCIETY HOLD OF THEM. USING THE ARTS AND EDUCATION, EORO IS TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF YOUTH BEHIND BARS IN SAN MATEO, SANTA CLARA AND SAN FRANCISCO COUNTIES TO ASSIST THEM ON THE PATH TO BECOMING SUCCESSFUL ADULTS AND IN BREAKING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE THAT ENTRAPS SO MANY OF THEIR PEERS. EACH ONE REACH ONE RECEIVED THE NEW AMERICAN COMMUNITY AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY IN 1999, AND WAS CHOSEN AS ONE OF THIRTY-SIX "EXTRAORDINARY ORGANIZATIONS THAT TRANSFORM LIVES AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES" BY THE SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION IN 2007. EORO HELPED AUTHOR AND PASS AB622 IN 2008, WHICH LOWERED THE GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT TESTING (GED) AGE FROM 18 TO 17, AFFORDING INCARCERATED YOUTH THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE A GED. THE PRESIDENT'S COMMITTEE ON THE ARTS AND THE HUMANITIES, NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EORO AS ONE OF 50 SEMI-FINALISTS OF 459 NATIONWIDE NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2010, 2013, 2014, NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES YOUTH PROGRAM AWARDS. IN 2011, EORO RECEIVED THE SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE OF ECONOMIC AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT'S FIRST ANNUAL OUTSTANDING WORKFORCE PARTNERSHIP AWARD, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE YOUTH GUIDANCE IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE. OVER THE PAST DECADE, WE HAVE EVOLVED INTO A UNIQUE NON-PROFIT THAT ORGANIZES THE COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN DIVERSION PROGRAMS SERVING INCARCERATED YOUTH. OUR MENTOR-BASED PROGRAMS ANNUALLY ENGAGE OVER 100 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM AS INDIVIDUAL MENTORS, TUTORS, ACTORS, AND PAINTERS WHILE PROMOTING COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION AMONG THE SYSTEMS VARIOUS COMPONENTS. POPULATION SERVED THE REALITIES YOUTH IN THE SYSTEM INTENSIFIES EVERY DECADE AND EACH ONE REACH ONE STRIVES TO PROVIDE PROGRAMS THAT MEET THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF THESE YOUTH. EORO PROGRAMS SERVE MALE AND FEMALE, INCARCERATED YOUTH, 14 TO 18 YEARS OF AGE IN SAN MATEO, SANTA CLARA AND SAN FRANCISCO COUNTIES OVER 75% OF THE YOUTH WE SERVE COME FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, OFTEN WITH HISTORIES OF PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT, GUN VIOLENCE, INCARCERATION, AND/OR SUBSTANCE ABUSE. MANY RESIDE IN SINGLE PARENT HOUSEHOLDS, OR ARE FORMER/CURRENT PARTICIPANTS IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM. A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER HAVE UNDETECTED LEARNING DISABILITIES, AS WELL AS A HISTORY OF ATTENDANCE PROBLEMS AND ACADEMIC FAILURE IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL SETTINGS. A DISPROPORTIONATE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ARE DEFICIENT IN READING AND MATHEMATICS. MOST OF THE YOUTH SERVED BY ADAPT ARE PERFORMING BELOW THEIR EXPECTED GRADE LEVELS. IN SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY, THE MAJORITY OF THE DETAINED YOUTH ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN. ALMOST 80% OF EORO PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS ARE LOW-INCOME YOUTH OF COLOR, AND MANY RESIDE IN SINGLE PARENT HOUSEHOLDS, AND ARE FORMER OR CURRENT FOSTER YOUTH. MOST ARE ALARMINGLY DEFICIENT IN EARNED ACADEMIC CREDITS, AND ARE CLOSE TO AGING OUT OF THE STATE-MANDATED PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM WITHOUT HAVING EARNED A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. |

"A DREAM AND A PLAN FOR TOMORROW (ADAPT) IS THE ONLY AFTER-SCHOOL FACILITATED STUDY HALL PROGRAM INSIDE YOUTH DETENTION FACILITIES IN THE BAY AREA ADDRESSING THE SPECIAL ACADEMIC NEEDS OF INCARCERATED YOUTH PROVIDING THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN THEIR GED WHILE DETAINED. IN ADAPT'S TUTORING COMPONENT, YOUTH WORK ONE-ON-ONE WITH ACADEMIC TUTORS/MENTORS TO PURSUE A GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA (GED) AS WELL AS PROVIDING POST-RELEASE LINKS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES THAT ASSIST THEM TO IDENTIFY JOB TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BEFORE THEY ARE RELEASED. OVER 989 YOUTH HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM. AS A RESULT OF THESE SERVICES, 39% OF THOSE YOUTH WERE ABLE TO COMPLETE GED TESTS AND 27% WERE SUCCESSFUL (ALL FIVE OF THE NECESSARY EXAMINES) IN PASSING THE CALIFORNIA STATE GED PRIOR TO RELEASE. AN ADDITIONAL122 YOUTH SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED AT LEAST THREE OF FIVE REQUIRED GED TESTS WHILE DETAINED AND WERE LINKED WITH OUTSIDE PARTNERS TO COMPLETE THEIR GED UPON THEIR RELEASE FROM CUSTODY. "PLAYWRITING WORKSHOPS HAS ENABLED OVER 859 DETAINED YOUTH TO WORK ONE-ON- ONE WITH A THEATER PROFESSIONAL TO WRITE AN ORIGINAL, ONE-ACT PLAY AS THE YOUTH EXAMINE THEIR LIFE CHOICES AS WELL AS THEIR ATTITUDES, OPINIONS AND VALUES. EACH PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP CONCLUDES WITH A STAGED READING OF THE PLAYS BY PROFESSIONAL ACTORS BEFORE A LIVE AUDIENCE COMPRISING THE YOUTH'S PARENTS, PEERS, TEACHERS, CASEWORKERS, AND INVITED MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. "GIRL'S HEALTH CHOICES IS A HEALTH EDUCATION AND LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM FOR DETAINED YOUNG WOMEN IN SAN MATEO. FACILITATED BY A CASE MANAGER, THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES ON TOPICS OF TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION, SELF-ESTEEM AND BODY IMAGE, BUDGETING, EMPLOYMENT, RELATIONSHIPS AND MORE. "HIV/STD PREVENTION PROGRAM, KEEPING IT SAFE (KIS) FOR BOYS AND HEALTHY CHOICES FOR GIRLS IS AN 8-WEEK SERIES PROGRAM THAT OFFERS YOUTH THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO RECOGNIZE CONCEPTS THAT WOULD HAVE TYPICALLY BEEN PROVIDED BY TRADITIONAL FAMILIAL ROLE MODELS INCLUDING DEFINING HEALTHY, RESPECTFUL PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF PURSUING HIV PREVENTION SKILLS, AND THE IDENTIFICATION WITH DISCUSSION ON THE EFFECTS OF POTENTIAL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH SEXUAL INTIMACY SUCH AS, HIV/AIDS, TEEN PREGNANCY, AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD). OVER 1,167 YOUTH HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THESE PROGRAMS. "ADVOCACY AND COLLABORATION WITH THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND INSTITUTIONAL STAFF TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS THAT IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR DETAINED YOUTH AND BETTER COORDINATION AMONG THE SYSTEM'S VARIOUS COMPONENTS. USING THE ARTS AND EDUCATION, EACH ONE REACH ONE IS TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF YOUTH BEHIND BARS TO ASSIST THEM ON THE PATH TO BECOMING SUCCESSFUL ADULTS AND IN BREAKING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE THAT ENTRAPS SO MANY OF THEIR PEERS. MANY SEE FOR THE FIRST TIME THAT THEIR FUTURES CAN HOLD POSSIBILITIES BEYOND A LIFE IN PRISON. OUR TEAM FEELS STRONG, INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED IN SPITE OF ALL THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES WE ARE ALL FACING.
