Major Activities

Activity 2
Support servicescase management: every youth radio participant has access to mental and physical wellness support designed to help them manage challenges in all areas of their lives through case management. By providing wrap-around services to our young people and supporting them in examining their own experiences, our process promotes resiliency and self-sufficiency. Case managers connect young people to external resources and supports as needed, including housing, healthcare, legal support and more.academic and career advising: we help every student reach their academic and career goals through workshops, field trips, guest speakers, and individualized guidance on a range of higher educational and professional opportunities. Services include homework assistance, sat preparation, college application prep, financial aid guidance, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation.healthy food: youth radio provides students with basic nutrition, culinary skills, knowledge of how to prepare accessible healthy food options, and daily snacks and meals prepared by youth interns working alongside a professional chef.
Activity 3
Digital media and technology education youth radio educates low-income 14-24 year olds in media and technology. Youth radio students engaged in six months of intensive media and technical education and on-the-job training. In the first three months of training, students surveyed journalism, music production, and multimedia skills. Students who advanced to the second three months of training focused on a single track for the session, and graduated with a final project and a polished resume. When students complete six months of training, they are eligible for paid internships within one of youth radio's programs and departments. Interns worked alongside industry professionals to polish their skill sets in production, tech and engineering, or administration. Working together, they developed team and professional communication skills. Interns are hired through a competitive application process and complete either a three- or six-month apprenticeship. In 2012, youth radio educated more than 250 young people, and provided more than 250 paid internships.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation0FRANK MARTIN, OFFICER, IS THE SISTER OF REBECCA MARTIN WHO WAS YOUTH RADIO'S SENIOR PRODUCER IN 2012.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation1THE FORM 990 WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE ENTIRE GOVERNING BOARD AS WELL AS THE PRESIDENT/ED OF THE ORGANIZATION. THE PRESIDENT WILL REVIEW THE FORM 990 WITH THE AUDIT COMMITTEE AND THE FISCAL OFFICER. ANY NECESSARY CHANGES WILL BE MADE ON THE FORM. ONCE ALL NECESSARY CHANGES ARE MADE AND THE PRESIDENT IS IN AGREEMENT WITH THE AUDIT COMMITTEE AND THE FISCAL OFFICER ON THE FINISHED FORM 990, IT WILL BE SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT, DATED AND SUBMITTED BY THE FILING DEADLINE. A COPY OF THE APPROVED FORM 990 WILL BE PROVIDED TO ALL OF THE OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS BEFORE THE RETURN IS FILED.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation2FOR EACH INTEREST DISCLOSED, THE FULL BOARD, OR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OR THE PRESIDENT OR THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD, AS APPROPRIATE, WILL DETERMINE WHETHER THE ORGANIZATION SHOULD: (A) TAKE NO ACTION OR (B) DISCLOSE THE SITUATION MORE BROADLY AND INVITE DISCUSSION/RESOLUTION BY THE FULL BOARD OF WHAT ACTION TO TAKE, OR (C)REFRAIN FROM TAKING ACTION AND OTHERWISE AVOID THE CONFLICT. IN MOST CASES THE BROADEST DISCLOSURE POSSIBLE IS ADVISABLE SO THAT DECISION-MAKERS CAN MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE ORGANIZATION. WHEN THE CONFLICT INVOLVES A DECISION-MAKER, THE PERSON WITH THE CONFLICT ("INTERESTED PARTY"): (I) MUST FULLY DISCLOSE THE CONFLICT TO ALL OTHER DECISION-MAKERS; (II) MAY NOT BE INVOLVED IN THE DECISION OF WHAT ACTION TO TAKE (E.G.,MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN A VOTE) BUT MAY SERVE AS A RESOURCE TO PROVIDE OTHER DECISION-MAKERS WITH NEEDED INFORMATION. IN SOME CASES THE PERSON WITH THE CONFLICT MAY BE ASKED TO RECUSE HIM/HERSELF FROM SENSITIVE DISCUSSIONS SO AS NOT TO UNDULY INFLUENCE THE DISCUSSION OF THE CONFLICT. IN ALL CASES, DECISIONS INVOLVING A CONFLICT WILL BE MADE ONLY BY DISINTERESTED PERSONS. THE FACT THAT A CONFLICT WAS MANAGED AND THE OUTCOME WILL BE DOCUMENTED IN THE MINUTES OF BOARD MEETINGS IF THE CONFLICT WAS RELATED TO A BOARD MEMBER, AND REPORTED BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO THE BOARD/CHAIR OF THE BOARD AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE APPROPRIATE COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD (E.G., AUDIT COMMITTEE) IF THE CONFLICT WAS RELATED TO A STAFF MEMBER. THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE PRESIDENT WILL MONITOR PROPOSED OR ONGOING TRANSACTIONS OF THE ORGANIZATION (E.G., CONTRACTS WITH VENDORS AND COLLABORATIONS WITH THIRD PARTIES) FOR CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND DISCLOSE THEM TO THE BOARD AND STAFF, AS APPROPRIATE, WHETHER DISCOVERED BEFORE OR AFTER THE TRANSACTION HAS OCCURRED.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation3BOARD MEMBERS REVIEW THE JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND WRITTEN GOALS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, COMMENT ON PERFORMANCE IN THE AREAS BELOW AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COMING YEAR. THE EMPLOYEE ALSO REVIEWS HIS OR HER OWN PREVIOUS GOALS AND PREPARES A LIST OF NEW ONES. IF THERE ARE NO PREVIOUS YEAR'S GOALS, THESE WILL NEED TO BE CREATED BY BOTH THE COMMITTEE - WITH FULL BOARD APPROVAL - AND THE DIRECTOR. THE COMMITTEE SOLICITS COMMENTS FROM THE ENTIRE BOARD IN AREAS SUCH AS: LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT (INCLUDING INITIATIVE AND FOLLOW-THROUGH) PLANNING (MISSION AND VISION, ASSESSING NEEDS) PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION, FISCAL REPORTING & BUDGETING FUNDRAISING COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC RELATIONS PROFESSIONALISM
