Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of Wild Salmon Center is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wild salmon ecosystems across the Pacific Rim. We identify science-based solutions to sustain wild salmonids and the human communities and livelihoods that depend on them.

Major Activities

Activity 2
1) WESTERN PACIFIC PROGRAMWSC is working to create and support local watershed councils to protect and steward salmon rivers in the Russian Far Easts Kamchatka, Khabarovsk, and Sakhalin Island. By coordinating councils across multiple basins and ecoregions, we are accomplishing a myriad of conservation goals. 2012 highlights include:WSC helped to establish a new NGO Save the Salmon Together to coordinate salmon conservation efforts across Kamchatka Peninsula. Ust-Bolsheretsky Public Watershed Council and WSC organized the First Kamchatka Salmon Festival in August 2012 on the Bolshaya River. WSC received a public recognition Salmon Keeper Award for collaborative salmon conservation efforts on Kamchatka from the Ust-Bolsheretsky Public Watershed Council.WSC organized two exchanges for Kamchatka protected area managers and fishery scientists to Alaska, providing training in ecosystem-based resource management.A three-year taimen tagging program was initiated to study population size and dynamics in the Koppi River watershed. A study of this kind has never been undertaken on this species.
Activity 3
2) NORTH AMERICA PROGRAMWSC conducts conservation activities in the states of Oregon, Washington, California and now, in Alaska. Through collaboration with public and private partners, WSC focuses on building and leading diverse coalitions to ensure the long-term abundance, viability, and diversity of North Americas strongest remaining salmon populations. 2012 highlights include: The Oregon Board of Forestry unanimously approved moving forward to create a new category for visible and durable conservation areas on Oregons State Forests. The first-ever Wild Salmonid Management Zone (WSMZ) designated for steelhead by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The new zone covers the entire Sol Duc River (227 square miles) on the Olympic Peninsula. WSC staff was appointed by Gov. Kitzhaber to join a small, high-level panel of representatives from conservation organizations, timber and the Counties to explore enduring solutions to Oregon and California Lands issues.WSCs first Alaska staff member was hired to develop and lead a cohesive and effective conservation program and open an office in Anchorage, Alaska.

IRS990/Description03) STATE OF THE SALMON & SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES PROGRAMWSC combines the organizations technical, scientific, and collaborative strengths with the power of the global marketplace to leverage improvements in wild salmon fishery management. Our goal is to work with a broad group of partners- using market incentives- to achieve long-term advances in wild Pacific salmon fisheries and to assist their efforts to become a sustainable, third-party-certified seafood supply. 2012 highlights include:Ozernaya sockeye fishery received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification in February 2012. These are the first two processors on Kamchatka to receive MSC CoC certification, which verifies that the companies tracking and traceability systems meet the MSC standard. The Northeast Sakhalin pink fishery was awarded MSC certification in June 2012. This is the first Russian fishery certified since Iturup Islands pink and chum salmon fishery received MSC certification in 2009, and the first wild salmon-based fishery to receive the award. The Ozernaya sockeye fishery was awarded MSC certification in September 2012. This is the largest sockeye fishery in Asia and the first fishery from Russias Kamchatka Peninsula to achieve MSC certification.WSC successfully implemented a scaled-up independent observer program to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fisheries in Russia. The independent observer program was implemented for the second year in a row on the Ozernaya during summer 2012 and expanded to three other regions in the RFE.In a follow up to a 2010 conference on the interactions between wild and hatchery salmon, WSC released a collection of 23 new scientific studies on risks posed by hatchery fish.
