Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Refugee & Immigrant Transitions (RIT), formerly Refugee Transitions, was founded in 1982 as the Refugee Womens Program. RIT is a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency providing free education, family engagement, and community leadership program services to people who have sought refuge in the U.S.Our students have experienced forced migration due to war, violence, persecution, and/or extreme economic hardship. Despite the adversity they have gone through, as well as the major challenges they face here in the U.S., our students inspire us daily with their courage and commitment. Our work is rooted in a strengths-based approach, where we cultivate mutually beneficial cross-cultural relationships and create opportunities for newcomer leadership. Our mission is to welcome and partner with people who have sought refuge, employing strengths-based educational approaches and community supports so they may thrive in our shared communities. Our vision is to see all newcomers thrive and become full, participati

RIT's mission is to welcome and partner with those who have sought refuge, employing strengths-based educational approaches and community supports so they may thrive in our shared communities.During Covid-19, RIT has operated at full capacity. The diversity of RIT's staff has positioned us to address the needs of the most socially and linguistically isolated communities. Our staff have a deep understanding of clients strengths and challenges and are able to reach community members who might be isolated. This has allowed us to quickly pivot and develop systems for virtual service delivery (by phone and online). RITs team consists of 43 (22 full-time equivalent) dedicated staff members. Between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, RIT served 2,000 refugee and immigrant youth and adults with education, family engagement, and community leadership services. Approximately 200 volunteers participated in our work. RIT employs a strengths-based approach, honoring the knowledge and skills as well as

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

RT's Board Treasurer and Finance Committee reviews the 990 and audit on behalf of the RT Board of Directors and presents the information to the rest of the Board.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Refugee & Immigrant Transitions has a conflict of interest policy in both the Board By Laws and Employee Handbook. The By Laws are shared with each new member when they join RT's Board of Directors and the People & Culture (P&C) Employee Handbook is shared with all new employees as part of the on boarding process. Supervisors/managers follow up with employees annually as part of their yearly review (follow P&C protocols). At the end of each board meeting, the board chair asks if any members have a conflict to disclose. This is documented in the minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The Board Finance and Governance committee discuss compensation before approving the Executive Director's annual raise/salary.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15B: Compensation Review and Approval Process for Officers and Key Employees

Refugee Transitions Board members review/compare employee salaries with those in the Bay Area non-profit compensation reports.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19: Other Organization Documents Publicly Available

Available upon written or verbal request.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board have determined that the Organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under IRC 501(c)(3) and California RTC 23701(d). The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions as of June 30, 2020 and is not aware of any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. IRS990/Desc0Youth Programs:Approx. 1,330 youth enrolled in our Bridge-2-Success Youth Development Program and Youth Newcomer Community Engagement Program and achieved significant outcomes. (1) 80% of the high school seniors who have consistently attended our academic programs, graduate high school, outperforming California's graduation rate for English learners by 11%. (2) 100% of the participants in our youth leadership program enrolled in college, or are on track to college. (3) With new funding last year, we were able to expand our existing tutoring/mentoring program and formalize goal-setting for a number of students with an Individual Success Plan. Popular goals that students have chosen: succeeding in school and graduating; finding a job or internship; enrolling in college; reading bills and creating a budget. 100% mentees served by the grant made progress towards at least one goal. RIT continues to expand and improve the Bridge-2-Success Program based on students' goals. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Adult Programs:Approx. 670 adults enrolled in our English Language and Literacy Program (including participants in the Women's Initiative/Parent-Tot Initiative). Our priority student population are adults, many of whom have young children, reading at four English language levels: Literacy, Low Beginner, High Beginner, and Low Intermediate. (Levels according to the National Reporting System for Adult Education.) RIT students gain English, vocational, and other vital skills, and often outperform California state averages. RIT also connects adults and families to vital community resources through multilingual case management, workshops, referrals, and community partnerships. We work in collaboration with many partners across the Bay Area, through joint case management, coordination of service delivery, and/or referrals. Our partners include grassroots community-based organizations, high schools, school districts, legal and workforce services providers, refugee resettlement agencies, government institutions, and others.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board have determined that the Organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under IRC 501(c)(3) and California RTC 23701(d). The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions as of June 30, 2020 and is not aware of any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. The Organizations tax returns are generally subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.
