Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Intern Program:In general, our internship program allows women, especially women of color, interested in womens studies, ethnic studies, and any aspect of non-profit publishing to explore career paths at Aunt Lute, and be taught skills by our staff that are necessary to further their careers. Usually we pay a basic stipend, but during Covid we were able to support our newly installed intern with a living part-time wage for 15hours per week, as she could not go on unemployment. And we now are seeking grants that will allow us to always pay interns a living part-time wage. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Permissions:Our permissions sales continue to grow, which is a testament to how important our publications are, as authors, editors and anthologists continue to seek our permission to include excerpts in their new work. Over 25% of our net sales income now comes from reprint and permissions sales. Further, the contribution of our literature to the fields of gender, literary, and cultural studies is evident in its continued use in lectures and conferences. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Marketing and Outreach:Community Outreach and Development:The major work for the marketing team was to set up and/ or plan the events and programs listed above, including those that were postponed into 2021. It is our mission to make partnership with other community organizations part of programming, thus we know we reach deep into community, as evidenced by our Building a POC Community and Home in the Bay partnerships. We use these partnerships as a basis for social media outreach, as well as communicating to the various community meetings and meeting with community venue administrators. This requires an intense amount of work, even more so with virtual communication, for marketing staff, but it is the foundation on which a successful multi-cultural event is built.Aunt Lute Books continues its commitment to literacy by donating cartons of books to local Bay Area libraries, prisons and county juvenile halls. We also continued to build community through our bi-monthly meetings with other non-profit literary organizations.PLANNED PUBLICATIONS FOR COMING YEAR, 2021Borderlands/La Frontera, the Critical EditionBorderlands/La Frontera (original classic), 5th editionEl Mundo Zurdo, 8th editionShell Shaker, 2nd edition3 eBooksDECREASED INCOME FROM SALES; INCREASE IN INCOME FROM RELIEF GRANTSThough are sales income dropped sharply in 2020 during Covid, several relief grants allowed us to bring staff back from furlough August 1 and to continue production work, events and event planning. We are now stable financially and are ready to implement lessons we learned during this pandemic year to better insulate ourselves to similar travails that appear in the future.

IRS990/Desc0Book Production:Though we were only able to produce one of three planned releases for 2020, Olivia on the Record, we were able to concentrate our marketing resources on this project and saw, therefore, higher sales than anticipated in the first few months after its release. However, due to four months of furloughs and not being in our offices for most of 2020, we were unable to finish an important project and thus lost the increase in sales wed anticipated in our budgeting.*Borderlands/La Frontera: The Critical EditionHowever, editorial and typesetting work continued on this important projectnow in its 5th year of dedicated staff and editor travails: the production of a critical edition of our classic Chicana text, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. This new work will contextualize the book (in its 35th year) and its importance to the literary canon, as well as give information about the author and the creation of the original text. Release date, August, 2021About the Critical Edition from the introduction:Readers familiar with Anzaldas works will know that she frequently cited Borderlands to explain many of her notions about identity and agency and to elaborate new ones, to reflect about how own writing process, and to review the development of her own thought. What follows in this introduction is an examination of the process of writing Borderlands in relation to Anzaldas later theories on writing. In the 1990s Anzalda modeled her theories on writing primarily on her recollection of her experiences composing Borderlands. Her preoccupation with writing and the Chicana writer is essential to the evolution of her thought.Praise for the Critical Edition:Imagine Borderlands as a timeless pyramid of ideas that has been added to, deconstructed, reconstructed, transcribed, translated, and trans-interpreted by every generation of Chicanx and non-Chicanx feminist scholars in the thirty-five years since its publication. This critical edition offers both a painstakingly articulated scholarly scaffolding around Anzaldas original text and a bridge into the life and memory of the author who designed the blueprint of that pyramid. Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Professor of Chicana/o Studies, English, and Gender Studies, UCLA*Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, 5th EditionAlso, in 2020 we began work on a 5th edition of the original Borderlands/La Frontera which will be pared down, as some of the added material in earlier editions is now included in the critical edition, and no longer needed. This has allowed us to actually lower the price, thus making it even more affordablea goal we always keep in mind.E-BOOK PRODUCTION: Our eBook sales continue to exceed the expense in producing them. As we produce a new book in print form, we simultaneously release the eBook version. We recognized the importance of eBooks when classes were held off-campus during Covid, and are now pursuing grant funds to convert all of our back list to eBooks.

Over 25% of our net sales income now comes from reprint and permissions sales. Further, the contribution of our literature to the fields of gender, literary, and cultural studies is evident in its continued use in lectures and conferences.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Marketing and Outreach:Community Outreach and Development:The major work for the marketing team was to set up and/ or plan the events and programs listed above, including those that were postponed into 2021.

Usually we pay a basic stipend, but during Covid we were able to support our newly installed intern with a living part-time wage for 15hours per week, as she could not go on unemployment. And we now are seeking grants that will allow us to always pay interns a living part-time wage.
