Activity 2

Watershed protection & restoration program: protect the headwaters of the idaho panhandle national forest so the spokane aquifer can continue to provide pure water for regional residents. Work with municipalities on water conservation, water storage, wastewater treatment, and protection of the spokane river. Beaver project: identify physical locations for beaver dams based on the best suitable habitat for beavers, and provide estimates of water storage potential and address the social and economic benefits, including opportunities for water banking and conservation easements. Work with property owners with nuisance beavers and relocate families to natural areas.

Activity 3

Urban ecology program: educate citizens of the toxic legacy resulting from a century of mining in the spokane and coeur d'alene watershed. Distribute materials about the risks from exposure to toxics in the spokane river. Work with low-income and minority communities and educate them about toxics in the river and lead exposure risks in our community neighborhoods. This program also includes implementing urban efforts, through local partnerships, to decrease air pollution, safeguard air quality, build community and enhance overall quality of life in spokane. Through project sustain, we work with local schools to get students outside and engage in hands-on, science-based learning activities and community service projects.
