Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the foundation is to encourage and apply philanthropic contributions to help improve the human condition, embrace diversity, promote a humane and democratic society, and enhance the community's quality of life, now and for future generations.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Buck institute for research on aging (the "institute"):the mission of the institute is to increase the healthy, productive years of life through basic biomedical research on aging and its connection to chronic conditions commonly associated with old age. The institute's research programs address two fundamental questions: 1) what is the nature of aging?, and 2) what factors trigger diseases associated with age?see schedule o.the institute currently supports 23 laboratories with principal investigators recruited for leadership in their respective fields of research. The institute's research programs are based on an interdisciplinary approach, involving complimentary areas of inquiry: the genetics and biochemistry of aging including oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and genetic determination of lifespan. The institute is researching age-related conditions including cancer, stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration, alzheimer's disease and parkinson's disease, as well as, regenerative medicine (stem cell research) and aging. The institute utilized new technology to support age-related research including genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. In addition, education and training to encourage the career development of the next generation of age researchers at all levels is a key component of its research program. The institute sponsored a series of informal and formal research seminars which included international and national scientific symposia for the aging research community. The science education program allowed high school and college students to work side by side with researchers to enhance learning and encourage students interested in entering the field of science. In addition, the institute conducted quarterly public seminars on various topics related to aging for bay area residents. Docent-lead public tours were also conducted on a weekly basis.
Activity 3
Buck institute for education ("bie"):bie builds educational organizational capacity to prepare and support teachers using project based learning (pbl) by developing a suite of customizable tools, coaching materials and professional development protocols and a national faculty of facilitators who can lead workshops and provide technical assistance to school districts and school networks. See schedule o.in 2012/2013 bie conducted 408 pbl presentations, webinars and workshops for schools, schooldistricts, and other organizations nationally and internationally, providing professional development to over 13,000 educators. Bie's annual five-day conference on pbl, pbl world, attracted approximately500 educators from around the world. Bie developed and promoted the widespread distribution of pbl products and practices by producing and disseminating how-to products for teachers, school coaches, and administrators, providing online support to users of those products. In 2012/2013 bie distributed 31,390 of its pbl publications, which included the pbl handbook, pbl starter kit, pbl for 21st century success, pbl in the elementary grades, and pbl 101 workbook bie continued to enhance its website (www.bie.org), launched its pblu.org website and online courses, and maintained an online teacher preparation website at http://www.pbl-online.org and a bie youtube channel. 1,215 teachers participated in five two-week classes on pblu.org with an average completion rate of 73%. Also in fy 2012/2013 a set of pbl-focused math projects targeted to common core state standards were created.bie synthesized, published and disseminated research-based knowledge abouteffective project based learning practices from the west virginia department of education's research study on the impact of pbl on students, and provided grand prairie independent school district in texas, research assistance with an assessment on pbl's impact on student learning. Bie analyzed feedback from over 200 participants at the 2012 pbl world and migrated to salesforce as the platform on which to develop a coaching information system that will centralize all relevant district and teacher information from client districts working with bie.
