“The center for documentary expression and art's board chair and executive director meet and review the 990. The 990 is also reviewed by the members of the board of directors.”
“The organization has a written conflict of interest policy. This policy requires that all board members and management annually review the policy and disclose any potential conflict of interest. If potential conflicts of interest are disclosed, the executive committee reviews those conflicts to determine the most appropriate course of action. Typically, this includes recusal from vote on items for which the board member has a real or potential conflict of interest.”
“The executive director's compensation is determined by the board of directors during the budgeting process each year. The board of directors considers market rates in determining a reasonable level of compensation. The approval of the budget, including the executive director's compensation, is documented.”
“Governing documents are made available upon request.”

“Major exhibits the development of documentary projects that conclude in major traveling exhibits with books and films, or other expressions of documentary work, is ongoing. On the average, documentary projects that result in a major exhibit take four-to-six years to research, develop, and produce. Between 2006-2011, the organization developed and completed a major exhibit titled, this light of ours: activist photographers of the civil rights movement. This project presented the civil rights movement through the work and voices of eight men and one woman who documented the national struggle against segregation and other forms of race-based disenfranchisement from within the movement. The exhibit inaugurated the human rights gallery at the leonardo: an art, science, and technology center, in downtown salt lake city, in october 2111, and remained available to the utah public for nine months, or until june 2012. The debut of this light of ours included audio guides for youth and adults that were cell-phone accessible; a six-page brochure for use by students and the general public; programs involving local and national activists; and a 251p book published by the university press of mississippi. The organization also developed a month-long symposium on four utah college campuses and partnered with utah's pbs affiliate, kued-tv, to create utah's freedom riders, a thirty-minute film that presented civil rights activists primarily working on utah issues. More than 58,000 people in utah visited the display, with about nine percent of total visitors being school children. In 2013, following the project's debut, the organization's executive director leslie kelen was retained by the utah state board of education (usbe) to create an eight- week on-line course to introduce utah public school teachers to the civil rights movement. Since 2013, director kelen has taught the class on an annual basis. In fall 2013, the exhibit this light of ours: activist photographers of the civil rights movement started traveling outside utah. An initial five-year period (2013-2018) was set aside for the exhibit's national tour. This touring period culminates with the exhibit's display at the irving arts center in irving, texas, between january-march 2018. A new five-year tour is expected to start in may 2018 and conclude in may 2023, with the possibility of being continued further. The organization is partnering with the maltz museum of jewish heritage in cleveland, ohio, to carry out the second five-year tour. New documentary projects and potential exhibits over the past two years, the organization has carried out research aimed to develop two interrelated documentary projects. The first project is tentatively titled, when you live in this world. It will use hundreds of oral histories created by the organization between 1982-1989 to convey, in print, the 20th century story of utah's ethnic and minority people. When you live in this world involves reediting and redesigning the book, missing stories: an oral history of ethnic and minority groups in utah, which was first published by the university of utah press in 1995 as a part of utah's centennial celebrations. It may also involve incorporating oral histories taped between 1998-2003, when the organization was conducting documentary work on new refugees and residents of salt lake city's west side. Unlike missing stories, which was prepared for utah's k-16 educators, when you live in this world seeks to create a publication that can appeal to utah educators and the general public. The second (and interrelated endeavor) is titled, my america: stories of utah's immigrants, migrants, and refugees. My america is conceived of as a multi-media exhibit utilizing a series of short (under 8 minutes long) video programs that tell the stories of immigrants, migrants, and refugees who left their places of origin in the 1924-1965 and 1965 to-the present periods and relocated to utah because of economic opportunities, govern”
“Exhibits that teach exhibits that teach displays are smaller than major exhibits and are designed for use in utah's k-12 public schools, public libraries, and rural museums. Exhibits contain photographs and oral histories (with related text); and they are generally booked from four-to-eight weeks at each educational site. Five exhibits that teach displays are currently available. In order of their development, they are: faces and voices of refugee youth (2002); sacred images: a vision of native american rock art (2007); ceremonies: a tale of sister cities (2008); reawakened beauty: the past, present, and future of the jordan river (2009); and justice-memory-activism (2014). Three of the five exhibits (sacred images; reawakened beauty; and justice- memory-activism) are accompanied by artists/scholars-in-residence (asir) programs, designed by the organization. Asir programs engage students in intensive, long-term, place-based education projects that promote study of the documentary arts; generate original student art; and integrate arts learning with learning in other subjects. Exhibits that teach displays and accompanying artists/scholars-in-residence programs enable students to create original art while exploring such varied subjects as: utah history, utah's ethnic and cultural diversity, indigenous cultures, ecology, biology, environmental science, immigration, discrimination and racism, cross cultural communication, and resolving conflict nonviolently. Over the past year, sacred images: a vision of native american rock art- artists/scholars-in-residence program was presented at corner canyon high school in the canyons school district. Reawakened beauty: the past, present, and future of the jordan river-artists/scholars-in-residence program was presented at the pacific heritage academy, in the salt lake city school district. And justice-memory-activism-artists/scholars-in- residence program was presented at kearns and clearfield high schools, in, respectively, the granite and davis school districts. Professional development on-line in 2000, the organization designed a two-semester-long, teacher training course-multiculturalism & storytelling-to expand its education-outreach efforts. Based on the organization's 1995 publication, missing stories: an oral history of ethnic and minority groups in utah, this initiative helped k-12 public school teachers infuse utah-based multicultural content into social studies, language arts, math, and science curricula. In 2008, the organization developed a website from the course's content that also was titled, multiculturalism & storytelling. This site contains selected lesson plans and action research models developed by teachers that took the course between 2000-2006. The aim of this website is twofold: (1) to make multicultural educational tools developed by the class' teachers available to educators statewide, and (2) to enrich dialogue on multicultural education in utah. The website can be currently accessed on the utah education network http://www.uen.org/mcst/index”

“The organization is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c) (3) of the internal revenue code and therefore has made no provision for federal income taxes in the accompanying financial statements. In addition, the organization has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a "private foundation" within the meaning of section 509 (a) of the internal revenue code. There was no unrelated business income for the year ended june 30, 2017. The organization's forms 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, for the years ending june 30, 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2014 are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they were filed. Generally accepted accounting principles require tax effects from an uncertain tax position to be recognized in the financial statements only if the position is more likely than not to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. If an uncertain tax position meets the more-likely-than-not threshold, the largest amount of tax benefit that is greater than 50% likely to be recognized upon ultimate settlement with the taxing authority is recorded. The organization's primary tax positions relate to its status as a not-for-profit entity exempt from income taxes and classification of activities related to its exempt purpose. Management has evaluated the tax positions reflected in the organization's tax filings and does not believe that any material uncertain tax positions exist.”

MY AMERICA IS CONCEIVED OF AS A MULTI-MEDIA EXHIBIT UTILIZING A SERIES OF SHORT (UNDER 8 MINUTES LONG) VIDEO PROGRAMS THAT TELL THE STORIES OF IMMIGRANTS, MIGRANTS, AND REFUGEES WHO LEFT THEIR PLACES OF ORIGIN IN THE 1924-1965 AND 1965 TO-THE PRESENT PERIODS AND RELOCATED TO UTAH BECAUSE OF ECONOMIC OPPORT |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | SEE SCHEDULE O EXHIBITS THAT TEACH EXHIBITS THAT TEACH DISPLAYS ARE SMALLER THAN MAJOR EXHIBITS AND ARE DESIGNED FOR USE IN UTAH'S K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PUBLIC LIBRARIES, AND RURAL MUSEUMS. THE WEBSITE CAN BE CURRENTLY ACCESSED ON THE UTAH EDUCATION NETWORK HTTP://WWW.UEN.ORG/MCST/INDEX |

| IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAXES UNDER SECTION 501(C) (3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AND THEREFORE HAS MADE NO PROVISION FOR FEDERAL INCOME TAXES IN THE ACCOMPANYING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. MANAGEMENT HAS EVALUATED THE TAX POSITIONS REFLECTED IN THE ORGANIZATION'S TAX FILINGS AND DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT ANY MATERIAL UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS EXIST. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | MAJOR EXHIBITS THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOCUMENTARY PROJECTS THAT CONCLUDE IN MAJOR TRAVELING EXHIBITS WITH BOOKS AND FILMS, OR OTHER EXPRESSIONS OF DOCUMENTARY WORK, IS ONGOING. MY AMERICA IS CONCEIVED OF AS A MULTI-MEDIA EXHIBIT UTILIZING A SERIES OF SHORT (UNDER 8 MINUTES LONG) VIDEO PROGRAMS THAT TELL THE STORIES OF IMMIGRANTS, MIGRANTS, AND REFUGEES WHO LEFT THEIR PLACES OF ORIGIN IN THE 1924-1965 AND 1965 TO-THE PRESENT PERIODS AND RELOCATED TO UTAH BECAUSE OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES, GOVERN |

THE WEBSITE CAN BE CURRENTLY ACCESSED ON THE UTAH EDUCATION NETWORK HTTP://WWW.UEN.ORG/MCST/INDEX |
