Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The organization did not change its selection or oversight process during the year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The organization has an endowment that was established by a donor and is to be held in perpetuity, with the earnings spent on improving the quality of care and increasing the number of children served. The organization also has a quasi-endowment that was established by the board of directors to support operations and capital expenditures.

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation has received tax-exempt status from the internal revenue service and california franchise tax board under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and under revenue and taxation code section 23701d, respectively. Since the foundation is exempt from federal and state income tax liability, no provision is made for current or deferred income taxes. The foundation uses the same accounting methods for tax and financial reporting. Management has considered its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken in its federal and state exempt organization returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. The foundation's returns are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities, generally for three years and four years, respectively, after they are filed.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS PROGRAMS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR PATIENT EMPOWERMENT. WE BUILD AWARENESS OF THE RISKS, SYMPTOMS, OUTCOMES, AND NEW TREATMENTS FOR VASCULAR DISEASE, HELPING TO ENSURE THAT PATIENTS WITH VASCULAR DISEASE AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE TO ENGAGE IN SHARED DECISION-MAKING ABOUT THEIR HEALTH CARE. OUR EFFORTS ARE MULTILINGUAL, FREE, AND ARE SPEFICIALLY TARGETED TOWARDS UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS SUCH AS BLACK, ASIAN, AND HISPANIC AMERICANS. OUR FOCUS ON PREVENTION AND OUR GOAL TO MAKE RESOURCES ACCESSIBLE TO VULNERABLE POPULATIONS AND COMMUNITIES MEANS THAT EVERY YEAR, MORE THAN 200,000 INDIVIDUALS AROUND THE WORLD VISIT OUR WEBSITE TO LEARN ABOUT VASCULAR DISEASE AND CONNECT TO CRITICAL RESOURCES.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/ExpenseAmt0294765
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0WE CATALYZE PATIENT-CENTRIC, COLLABORATIVE CONVENINGS AND PROJECTS IN ORDER TO ADVANCE TREATMENTS AND CURES ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF VASCULAR DISEASE. WE FOCUS ON BRINGING PATIENTS TO THE TABLE AS EQUAL DECISION-MAKERS, IN ADDITION TO GALVANIZING PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECTS THAT REQUIRE OUR TRUSTED, NEUTRAL LEADERSHIP, VIA THE VASCULAR HEALTH IMPACT NETWORK AND ITS ANNUAL CONVENING, THE INNOVATION SUMMIT. WE ALSO STIMULATE AND STEWARD LARGE RESEARCH PROJECTS THROUGH OUR COLLABORATIVE PATIENT-CENTERED RESEARCH GRANTS, WHICH REQUIRE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN STAKEHOLDERS AND AN EMPHASIS ON PATIENT LEADERSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt0221918
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0THE VASCULAR HEALTH IMPACT NETWORK (VHIN) SUPPORTS NOVEL COLLABORATIONS AND ADVANCES HIGH-IMPACT PROJECTS THROUGH NATIONAL MULTI-STAKEHOLDER INNOVATION SUMMITS AND PATIENT-CENTERED RESEARCH GRANTS. IT IS A FIRST-OF-ITS KIND FORUM FOR LEADERS IN VASCULAR CARE AND RESEARCH TO COLLABORATIVELY ADDRESS PRESSING PATIENT NEEDS, ALIGN SHARED INTERESTS AND LEVERAGE THE EXPERTISE OF THIS UNIQUELY DIVERSE COMMUNITY. MEMBERS INCLUDE DECISION-MAKERS REPRESENTING THE KEY PERSPECTIVES IN VASCULAR CARE AND RESEARCH INCLUDING ACADEMIA, CARE PROVIDERS, RESEARCHERS, REGULATORS, PAYERS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, PATIENT ADVOCATES.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1WE HAVE CONVENED WORKING GROUPS TO PROMOTE AND FACILITATE CHRONIC LIMB-THREATENING ISCHEMIA (CLTI) PATIENT ENGAGEMENT IN RESEARCH. THIS INITIATIVE WILL BUILD CAPACITY TO ENGAGE CLTI PATIENTS IN RESEARCH AS ADVISORS AND PARTICIPANTS, SO THAT STUDY RESULTS ALIGN WITH THE NEEDS OF THE PATIENT. IT WILL ALSO PRIORITIZE THE KINDS OF RESEARCH THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO PATIENTS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2OUR PATIENTS AS PARTNERS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE THE ENGAGEMENT OF PATIENT ADVISORS IN NATIONAL RESEARCH AND CARE IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES. WE ARE ALSO INTERESTED IN ENGAGING CAREGIVERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS IMPACTED BY VASCULAR DISEASE. WE ARE FOSTERING A COMMUNITY OF REPRESENTATIVE, EMPOWERED ADVOCATES TO CLAIM THEIR SEAT TO THE TABLE AS TRUE PARTNERS.
