These projects are in the areas of education, research, and/or community service. The grant request applications are sent to a review committee for a rigorours review and the average grant is us $10,000. Other program services 7: tim sear scholarship: presented to outstanding students who have presented papers or published during their training period and show the potential to be a future professor or leader in ophthalmology. This course will encourage discussion and analysis of current educational practices in latin america. Other program services 13: other program services 14: other program services 15: haiti relief project - the paao organized the haiti relief program in response to the devastating earthquake that took place on january 12, 2010. The first phase was to provide the haitian society of ophthalmology with first response emergency kits. For the second phase, the paao haiti relief program was designed to provide educational training scholarships to help the local haitian society rather than bricks and mortar recovery efforts. Other program services 16: lo mejor de la aao en espanol - this is a course that was established in 1986 and is given annually one day after the american academy of ophthalmology meeting. This is an all day educational course that provides highlights of the aao meeting in spanish. Other program services 17: educational programs are organized to provide for the advancement of ophthalmology in the western hemisphere by offering training programs, publications, and seminars. Other program services 18: the scholarships to young leaders are presented to the best works submitted under the age of 40. The winners receive a $1,500 prize. Other program services 19: the troutman veronneau prize was established in 1993 to recognize the best work submitted by an ophthalmologist under the age of 45, alternating between cornea and strabismus. The winner receives a $10,000 prize and presents the winning paper at the paao congresses. Other program services 22: prevencion de ceguera - this program is a collaboration with the lions club's international foundation to promote prevention of blindness activities in latin maerica. Other program services 23: pan am oculoplastics scholarships - the objective of this program is to provide specialized and advanced training the oculo-plastics field in the americas. Other program services 24: the vision panamerica award, in the amount of $1,000, is given out on the odd years at paao congresses to the best article published in the 2 year cycle.
