Mission

Galeria's mission is to foster public awareness and appreciation of Chicano/Latino art. Galeria sees itself as a laboratory where emerging and established artists explore contemporary issues in Latino art, culture and civic society. Galeria's programs and activities include visual art exhibitions and multi-disciplinary public events; ReGeneration, a mentorship program for emerging artists; the Digital Mural Program, a new genre public art project on our billboard at the corner of Bryant and 24th Street; Youth & Public Media, a mentorship and training program for youth of color in digital media; and our gift shop, Studio 24.

Audiences More than 16,000 people attend our annual programs: at least 50% are under 35 years of age and approximately two-thirds are Latinos.VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITIONS:Galera organizes a series of 5 or 6 exhibitions annually presenting local, national and international Latino artists. Number served: 14,000 The Visual Arts project focuses equally on presenting emerging, mid-career and establised Latino artists. Galeria's large-scale multidiciplinary exhibitions reflect the organization's willingness to take artistic risks. These exhibits present Latino visual artists employing a balance of various media to address a specific issue. Their works are contextualized through a series of performances, film screenings, lectures and artists panels.THE REGENERATION PROJECT: The ReGeneration Project is a constantly-evolving Galera program involving young Latino artists (ages 18-35). The Project negotiates a strongly reciprocal relationship between the Galera and young artists, offering numerous career development opportunities for the artists, while continuously re-juvenating the organization with the energy and fresh ideas of youth. Number served: 350 YOUTH MEDIA ART PROGRAM: The Youth and Public Media Project is a mentorship program that consists of a class taught by Julio Morales and which brings together students from the San Francisco Art Institute, the California College of the Arts, youth from Bay Area high schools and Youth Speaks, and Galera de la Raza's artists-in-residence. College students are trained in arts education, mentorship and community-based public art/social justice practices. The students also develop and teach multi-media workshops to youth participants. The class explores the potential "uses" of artwork in a social context and the role of the artist as a citizen in public life. College students are trained in arts education, mentorship and community-based public art/social justice practices. The students also develop and teach multi-media workshops to youth of color (video and sound editing and computer graphics).Number Served: 250DIGITAL MURAL PROJECT: Galera's Digital Mural Project encourages the use of new digital technology to create a series of innovative public art works. Building on the Galera's 30-year history of temporary murals in San Francisco's Mission District, the Digital Mural Project seeks to engage diverse communities through the creation of artistic, social and political content.Number served: n/aLA LUNADA: This is the Bay Area's only Latino literary lounge, which takes place every month on the night of the full moon. Each event features 2 or 3 guest poets and an open-mic.Number served: 1400CRUCEROS ARTEROS: A bi-monthly arts & crafts fair supporting local artists and artisans.Number served: 30COLLECTIONS: Galera la Raza's organizational records are archived by the Department of Special Collections of the Davidson Library as a discrete collection named Galera la Raza Archives. The collection consists of records such as slides, photographs, audio, digital, video and film documentation of the Galera de la Raza, exhibition and programming files, Galera publications, graphic prints and posters, correspondence and business files. The archives are part of Proyecto Caridad, a project of the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives of the Library at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The primary focus of Proyecto Caridad is to collect, organize, duplicate, and catalog the many slides of paintings, posters, murals, sculptures and other activities of Chicano artists represented in the archival collections of four of the major Chicano cultural art centers in California. The resulting slide library is being made available for study and research at the UC Santa Barbara Library.
