Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to help students grow as readers, writers, and thinkers while they develop the social and emotional skills necessary to thrive. Founded in 1980, center for the collaborative classroom conducted seminal research on social development. (see sch o) collaborative classroom has evolved into a partner for schools and is dedicated to transforming the school experience, developing students, and empowering teachers as they engage students. Center for the collaborative classroom is dedicated to students' growth as critical thinkers who learn from, care for, and respect one another.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Other projects, both grant supported and non-grant supportedalthough the previously mentioned projects have been important focal points of the past year, developmental studies center has also been engaged in a number of other projects. Highlights of some of these include the following:* the caring school community(r) program in the oakland unified school districtwith continued funding from the s. D. Bechtel, jr. Foundation, developmental studies center continues work begun in 2011* that is focused on expanding and deepening the implementation of the caring school community (csc) program in the oakland unified school district (ousd) in oakland, california. Csc is a schoolwide, classroom-based character development program that helps schools become caring communties of learners characterized by:- caring relationships- respectful collaboration among students, staff, and parents- a sense of common purpose- a clear commitment to norms and values of kindness, respect, responsibility, and learning.* the original grant was funded by the s. D. Bechtel, jr. Foundation, the san francisco foundation, and the mendelson family fund at the east bay community foundation.* afterschool kidzscience(tm) with lawrence hall of scienceanother area of our work is with afterschool kidzscience, which we publish in collaboration with lawrence hall of science. In 2013, we published "sunlight science" (march 2013), which joined "crime lab science" and "mystery detectives" (2012). The kits include all of the materials needed for the activities, a handbook featuring science background information and a glossary, a facilitator's guide for each activity session, question cards to extend children's learning, multiple additional print components, and video clips to help after-school leaders conduct the activities.* the lesson study initiative planin 2013, dsc completed year three of "the metlife foundation lesson study initiative"--an initiative to support the refinement and dissemination of lesson study. Through the collaborative research process of lesson study, teachers learn to build trusting, collaborative relationships, working together to improve their classroom practice and, so, better support students' learning. From the start, we at dsc had two main goals for this work. First was to learn the most effective strategies for disseminating lesson study nationally. The second was to complete our lesson study support kit--the resource, now named learning lesson study course, which dsc created for scaling up lesson study--as well as to develop online tools to further support lesson study. * social media: putting it to workdsc's ever-increasing repository of blogs continues to attract readers. Overall, social media/online marketing, search engine optimization (seo), and website development efforts continue to have an increasingly positive effect on visits to our website, resulting in a 48 percent annual increase in organic traffic over last year. (this does not include traffic contributed by google adwords.) a significant effort to support a series of common core state standards (ccss) webinars and in-person events contributed to this statistic. We currently have a pool of approximately 30,000 opt-in prospects and customers.* technology enhancementsas part of developing/enhancing developmental studies center's literacy offerings, the organization is exploring new technologies to infuse into our programs. This work is ongoing, and while we will continue to study the possibilities, several themes have begun to emerge: - electronic teacher manuals: we hope to develop a new generation of teacher manuals, which will include embedded videos that show exemplary practices.- interactive white boards. For use, at first, with the making meaning and being a writer programs, we are exploring use of interactive white boards, which will provide an easy way to display program materials, including, for example, directions for students and prompts for teachers. This technology
Activity 3
Dissemination of afterschool kidzlit(r) and afterschool kidzmath(tm)in 2013, developmental studies center continued its work with the new york life after-school initiative, a project supporting the national dissemination of dsc's after-school reading and mathematics enrichment programs through funding provided by the new york life foundation. For this most-recent two-year piece of grant work, we focused on national dissemination efforts. This was an extension of the work of the original grants (2007, 2008), which centered dissemination efforts in a targeted set of cities.the primary goal of the initiative, which concluded in february 2014, has been to make dsc's afterschool kidzlit and afterschool kidzmath programs available to after-school sites serving disadvantaged children. Through this effort, greater numbers of low-income/high-need young people have had the opportunity to engage in the high-quality literacy and math enrichment experiences that these after-school programs offer. In total in the past two years, we have taken the afterschool kidzlit and afterschool kidzmath programs into 2,870 after-school sites, touched 6,240 site staff with the accompanying professional development, and engaged approximately 287,000 children in these rewarding programs.

IRS990/Description0THE BASAL ALTERNATIVE PROJECTDSC LAUNCHED THE BASAL ALTERNATIVE PROJECT IN JANUARY 2012. THE AMBITIOUS PLAN BEHIND THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE A COMPLETE K-5 LITERACY PROGRAM THAT GETS TO THE CORE OF WHAT IS NEEDED TO ENHANCE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE IN READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS CLASSROOMS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. OUR SUITE OF INTEGRATED LITERACY PROGRAMS WILL:* EFFECTIVELY MOTIVATE ALL STUDENTS TO LEARN--PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS* HELP ALL STUDENTS MASTER BASIC LITERACY SKILLS WHILE ALSO LEARNING TO THINK DEEPLY ABOUT WHAT THEY READ AND WRITE* FACILITATE ALL STUDENTS' ACQUISITION OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS AND ETHICAL AND CARING DISPOSITIONS, AS A SEAMLESS PART OF ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION* ESTABLISH CLASSROOM CONDITIONS IN WHICH ALL STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO FORM SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH ONE ANOTHER AND THEIR TEACHERS AND, IN THE PROCESS, EFFECTIVELY "BOND" TO THEIR SCHOOL, THEIR TEACHERS, AND THEIR PEERS* SUPPORT TEACHERS IN THEIR OWN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AS THEY MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM USING BASAL TEXTBOOKS TO USING A BASAL ALTERNATIVETHE PROJECT CONTINUES TO MOVE AT A RAPID PACE, MAKING NOTABLE PROGRESS. WE ARE HOLDING TO THE PUBLICATION SCHEDULE FOR BOTH SIPPS(R) AND BEING A WRITER(TM) PROGRAMS--SCHEDULES THAT WERE ACCELERATED FROM THE ORIGINAL PLAN--WHICH WILL AFFORD DSC QUICKER ACCESS TO THE RAPIDLY CHANGING MARKET. AT THIS TIME, THE FOURTH SIPPS LEVEL HAS BEEN PUBLISHED AND FINAL FILES FOR ALL LEVELS AND COMPONENTS OF BEING A WRITER HAVE BEEN RELEASED TO THE PRINTER, WHICH MEANS THAT PUBLICATION AND RELEASE TO OUR CUSTOMERS IS NOT FAR OFF. SOME OF THE MAJOR MILESTONES OF THIS PAST YEAR INCLUDE:* DSC REMAINS IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL FINANCIAL GOALS.* WE HAVE COMPLETED THE PUBLICATION OF ALL FOUR LEVELS OF SIPPS(R), DSC'S PHONICS INTERVENTION PRODUCT. THE PUBLICATION CONSISTED OF DUAL PRINT/DIGITAL TEACHER'S MANUALS AND WEB APPLICATIONS FOR ASSESSMENT, GROUPING, AND CARD DECK MANAGEMENT. THESE NEW PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN VERY WELL RECEIVED BY THE MARKET, AND THEY HELP VALIDATE DSC'S STRATEGIC DESIGN, WHICH ACCOMMODATES THE MULTIPLE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS AVAILABLE IN CLASSROOMS.* WE HAVE ALSO COMPLETED THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALL LEVELS AND COMPONENTS OF BEING A WRITER(TM), GRADES K-5. THIS PROGRAM CONSISTS OF DUAL PRINT/DIGITAL TEACHER'S MANUALS AT EACH GRADE, STUDENT RESPONSE BOOKS (GRADES 1-5), ALL-NEW SKILL PRACTIVE TEACHING GUIDE AND STUDENT SKILL PRACTICE BOOKS (GRADES 1-5), ASSESSMENT RESOURCE BOOK (ALL GRADE LEVELS), AND THE WRITING PERFORMANCE TASK PREPARATION GUIDE (GRADES 3-5). MORE THAN 1,000 INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD ACTIVITIES HAVE ALSO BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE PROGRAM AND MORE THAN HALF OF THE 70 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT VIDEOS THAT ACCOMPANY THE PROGRAM HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.* THE ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR BEING A WRITER (DSC CLASSVIEW(TM)) HAS BEEN CONCEPTUALIZED AND PROTOTYPED. VERSION 1 OF THE WEB APP IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW. DEPLOYMENT IS SCHEDULED FOR MAY 1, 2014. * THE K-2 EARLY READING PROGRAM HAS UNDERGONE PILOT TESTING IN FOUR STATES WITH 40 TEACHERS. TEACHER FEEDBACK HAS BEEN INTEGRATED INTO THE PRODUCT DESIGN AND LESSON STRUCTURES WERE ADAPTED AS NEEDED. WRITING HAS BEGUN ON THE EARLY READING PROGRAM. * THE REVISION PLANS FOR MAKING MEANING(R) AND MAKING MEANING VOCABULARY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. BOOK SELECTION OF THE TRADE BOOK TITLES THAT ARE PART OF THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN COMPLETED FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS. WE WILL BE WORKING ON THESE PROGRAMS IN TWO STAGES--FIRST COMPLETING THE MANUSCRIPT FOR K-2 AND THEN MOVING ON TO GRADES 3-5. MANUSCRIPT DEVELOPMENT HAS BEGUN FOR BOTH MAKING MEANING AND MAKING MEANING VOCABULARY. THE MANUSCRIPT DEVELOPMENT FOR GRADES K-2 IS NEARLY COMPLETE, AND THE REVISION OF GRADES 3-5 BEGAN IN LATE MARCH. * WE HAVE DEVELOPED AND LAUNCHED V1.5 OF THE DSC LEARNING HUB, OR THE HUB, WHICH CURRENTLY HOUSES SIPPS CONTENT PLUS PREVIEW LESSONS FROM BEING A WRITER. THE HUB SERVES AS THE REPOSITORY FOR ALL DIGITAL COMPONENTS OF THE BASAL ALTERNATIVE PROJECT AND AS AN EASY-TO-MANA
