Activity 2

Implementation of the caring school community(tm) program in the oakland unified school districtwith continued funding from the s. D. Bechtel, jr. Foundation, developmental studies center continues work begun in 2011 (funded by the s.d. Bechtel, jr. Foundation, the san francisco foundation, and the mendelson family fund at the east bay community foundation) that is focused on expanding and deepening the implementation of the caring school community (csc) program in the oakland unified school district (ousd, in oakland, california). The classroom and schoolwide community-building is finding solid footing in ousd's elementary schools where the program helps schools cultivate caring, supportive, and collaborative relationships among students, staff, and parents; a sense of common purpose; and a clear commitment to values such as caring, respect, responsibility, and learning.

Activity 3

Dissemination of afterschool kidzlit(r) and afterschool kidzmath(tm)in 2012, developmental studies center continued its work with the new york life after-school initiative, a project supporting the national dissemination of dsc's after-school reading and mathematics enrichment programs through funding provided by the new york life foundation. Through the initiative, dsc's goal is to recruit 800 after-school sites to participate each year, implementing either the afterschool kidzlit or afterschool kidzmath programs. All participating after-school sites serving a majority of low-income students receive a 25 percent discount on program materials; all other sites receive a 10 percent discount. All sites also have access to free professional development--either in-person or online.
