“The executive committee of the board of trustees negotiates the employment contract with the board chair, head of school, or director of finance and operations. They benchmark lead administrators salaries to the 40th percentile of those in similar roles at their peer schools in san francisco. If a person is new to the lead admin role, they generally start that person's salary slightly below the 25th percentile and they generally try to index that salary to that 40th percentile within a few years. To do this, they use anonymized data found on the annual cal-isboa survey, which gives a percentile range for each position. This peer data is composed of san francisco tk-8 independent schools. The head of school and director of finance and operations work through each salary separately, and then adjust salaries relative to the general percentage increase authorized by the board and the isboa compensation data. They keep some notes but do not document all conversations about the salary increases. They go through this process annually, and the head of school's salary is negotiated separately by the executive committee of the board. The executive committee is provided the current salary compensation data from the cal-isboa survey. The process described here was last completed in 2024.”
