Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Since 1997, green empowerment (ge) has worked with in-country partners around the world to implement clean water and energy projects. Ge collaborates with indigenous peoples, rural communities, and local organizations in 12 countries to develop sustainable projects that improve health outcomes, build climate change resilience, advance gender equity, and lift families out of poverty. In 2023 alone, we completed projects in 186 communities worldwide. Water in 2023, ge primarily supported clean water work in 6 countries in latin america: colombia, peru, ecuador, bolivia, honduras and nicaragua and supported our first piped water system in uganda. These water projects not only meet the communities basic needs to be healthy, but they also provide opportunity for economic development, improve attendance at schools, advance gender equity, and empower the communities to manage their own natural resources in climate-protecting ways. Prior to our work in nyakabale, uganda, a cluster of communities there had only 4 boreholes (deep wells equipped with hand pumps), when they should have 20 to serve their combined population of 6,000 people, burdening women and girls with long queues and daily manual labor. While green empowerment specializes in piped water systems, our new partner, the water trust, specializes in water access in uganda. Together, we completed phase one of our largest piped water system to date, including a robust solar water pumping system, elevated 60m3 water reservoir, four new community tap stands (no hand pumping required) and main water distribution lines running through the community which will allow for additional community and household connections in future phases of the project. In latin america alone, we closed out a total of 33 wash related projects, supporting 122 communities and over 48,000 people.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Energy in 2023, ge and our partners reached 50,828 people via energy projects, including 1,935 who received power via micro hydro systems and 48,725 people reached via solar pv. Systems in 2023, ge continued work in malaysia to accelerate our efforts to reach over 200 unelectrified communities with renewable energy infrastructure in the next 10 years with the sabah roadmap consortium. One of the first sabah roadmap pilot communities, dagat, sabah, malaysia is home to the tidung community of 243 residents. We supported the installation of a 20-kw solar pv system that powers all 20 houses, a mosque, a community hall, and a community-run cold storage facility. This round-the-clock clean and affordable energy has transformed the fishing industry by allowing fishermen to store their catch for longer, saving them money on ice purchases. Additionally, revenue from selling ice blocks, ice cream, and cold drinks has increased the community's income, especially the womens collective. In uganda, we worked with our partner medical teams international to complete installations of solar + storage systems at juru, and ayiri health centers that provide reliable, renewable energy to elevate the quality of healthcare for over 40,000 nearby community members. In nicaragua, we continued to work with partners to install household solar systems for over 150 rural families where microgrid systems are not economically feasible due to the geographically dispersed households.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0ENERGY IN 2023, GE AND OUR PARTNERS REACHED 50,828 PEOPLE VIA ENERGY PROJECTS, INCLUDING 1,935 WHO RECEIVED POWER VIA MICRO HYDRO SYSTEMS AND 48,725 PEOPLE REACHED VIA SOLAR PV.
