Supplemental Narrative

Financial Statement Notes

Part IV, Line 2B: Explanation of escrow account liability

The children's course administers the bank account for a children's charity event. The event benefits three children's charities, of which the children's course is one. On form 990 part x, the bank account balance is included in cash on line 1 and a corresponding liability is included on line 21. The event periodically disburses funds to the charities that it benefits. Amounts disbursed from the event to the children's course are included as contribution revenue on form 990 part viii.

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Endowment funds consist of $100,000 cash and the land on which the children's course is located with a carrying value of $1,500,000. The land was donated to the children's course in 2008 and is recorded at its estimated fair market value at that time. Its use is permanently restricted to programs such as those the children's course currently provides. The land cannot be sold, developed, or otherwise converted to another use.

IRS990/Desc0Golf provides at risk children a positive alternative to alcohol and drug use as described by the IRS guidelines noted above, which validates sports programs. Golf with its values based etiquette, is unique in that it incorporates such attributes as honor, conduct, and character into the sport. It is for this reason that the Los Angeles Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has endorsed the LPGA program. DEA spokesman John Zienter stated that, "the sport of golf enhances a child's emotional, physical, social, and educational well being. This, coupled with the positive environment that surrounds the playing of golf encourages a youth to be drug and alcohol free." The Children's Course will host Portland's LPGA children in addition to at risk children who are not involved in the LPGA program.Through the clinics, workshops, lessons, seminars, and tournaments, children have the opportunity to learn many of life's lessons. The game teaches sportsmanship, etiquette, respect for others, and allows children to improve or develop their capabilities. The essence lies in relying on one's self to keep track of your own score and enforce the game's rules. Golf also teaches children to repair and take care of the golf course. The Children's Course will be very beneficial assisting youth in developing successful life skills through the game of golf. The Children's Course hosts regular golf sessions of the LPGA Urban Youth Golf Program (at least threes times weekly), holds weekly fees golf clinics and complimentary outings for several children's organizations and schools, including The Christie School, Candy Lane Elementary, Oregon City Schools, Police Activities League and the Leisure Hour Junior Golf Club, Special Olympics and the Urban League of Portland.Furthermore, the Course provides both summer and spring break camps for youth of all ages and skill levels. These sessions provide parents with a fun, positive activity for their children during a time period when it can be difficult to find enough for kids to do. The camps and year around programs and sessions provide youth golfers progressive levels to advance through as they develop their skills. This gives the children a long term perspective regarding both their participation in the sport and their personal development as individuals. This progressive approach gives children the challenge of setting and reaching skill goals, and enhances their self esteem and enthusiasm. As the youth progress, their playing privileges and responsibilities for appropriate course conduct and etiquette increase. In order to give all youth, particularly underprivileged inner city children, the opportunity to play golf, The Course has created a transportation network to provide greater access to the facility. The Course's Children's Activity's Van, provides transportation to any youth oriented organization that needs assistance in getting participants to the Course. In addition, the Course has accumulated an inventory of donated golf clubs for all youth who need equipment to use.The Course actively seeks and identifies youth organizations to partner with in order to increase the number of youth golfers. Also, the Course is developing strong relationships with schools and businesses to insure long term community based support. For instance, The Course continues to work with the LPGA Urban Youth Golf Program and Portland Parks and Recreation Bureau, and several local schools have been invited to use the facility for golf teams and physical education classes. All junior golfers can apply for scholarships, reduced rates, and free services to ensure that they have access to golf.
