Profile

SpectorDance's mission is "To Create and Present Dance that Makes a Difference!" Everything we do-whether creative, pedagogical, community-oriented, or even managerial-serves this greater purpose. This mission uniquely defines all our work. Our vision is "A world where everyone is connected, informed, and inspired through the beauty and power of dance." We live in a world that has become divided in many ways: wealthy and poor, urban and rural, politically progressive and conservative, educated and uneducated. We see dance, grounded in the human body we all share, as a means of coming together communally. Moreover, we see dance as a vehicle for education and enlightenment. It can convey the truth amid the flurry of falsehoods. Finally, dance is not passive-for the audience as well as the dancer. Dance at its best can inform, build deep empathy, motivate and inspire action, and transform both participants and viewers. It is not just contemplation or artistic pleasure.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

SpectorDance (SD) has been a non-profit organization since 1996. Fran Spector Atkins is Founder and Artistic Director. The SD mission is to establish a vibrant center for the performing arts, offering a wide variety of dance-based activities, that connects diverse artists and audiences, bridges disciplines through collaboration, and celebrates the power of dance to inform and inspire. The SD vision is to utilize dance as a vehicle to open doors, ignite creativity, and fuel the human spirit. With generous community support, SD has established successful programs including our School, Company, Educational Outreach, and the Choreographers Showcases. All our programs are housed in, or administered from, a state-of-the-art studio and performance venue in Marina.

Creating Dance: In 2024 SpectorDance Company continued development of two works: The first is Wildfires. The second is Ocean Trilogy. We are also in planning to restage Common Ground. Wildfires is inspired by collaborations with Tom Little Bear Nason (from the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County) and Dr. Chad Hamill (from the Spokane Tribe). Tom provided a generous interview with insights into the Native American approach to managing fire and living in harmony with nature. Chad composed original music and was a consultant on the culturally sensitive aspects of this work. Wildfires demonstrates how dance can build bridges among diverse parts of our community, help us to heal the past, and move into the future with greater understanding. Ocean Trilogy is inspired by interviews with renown ocean scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute about the threats confronting our ocean and the hopeful solutions from cutting-edge ocean science research. Common Ground is inspired by collaborations with the United Farm Workers and the National Steinbeck Center about the problems and possibilities in agriculture in California today. We also offer creative movement workshops that explore themes for our free performance works. All three works are examples of the SpectorDance mission to create and present dance that makes a difference.$0$45,000
Presenting Dance: In March 2024, SpectorDance presented the "Ocean Trilogy" with free performances and movement workshops at 16 schools in Salinas and King City for over 4000 youth. In May 2024, SpectorDance presented the 4th annual "Ocean Arts Festival" at the Monterey Museum of Art, featuring ocean-themed art in all genres created by young artists under the age of 24 years old. Our goals are to employ the power of creativity to heighten awareness of ocean issues, sparking dialogue and inspiring the next generation of climate action leaders.$0$40,000
Establishing Partnerships: In 2024, SpectorDance partnered with the Monterey Museum of Art, Hartnell College, the Stanton Theater, and the Salinas Elementary Schools, These partnerships are and continue to be key to offering our programs. In 2024, we initiated and planned for the 1st "King City Dance Week" in partnership with the Stanton Theater. Building on our past successes, we are thrilled to expand our partnership with the Stanton Theater to expand contemporary dance opportunities for King City audiences. King City is an under-resourced, agricultural community in Monterey County In 2024, we initiated and planned for 5th annual "Ocean Arts Festival." For this event, we established a new partnership with the YMCA of the Monterey Peninsula. With their four locations throughout Monterey County, we see an exciting opportunity to broaden the impact of this evolving festival.$0$30,000
