Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The primary exempt purpose and mission-based goal of Kukatonon Children's Dance Troupe is to inspire confidence, commitment and vitality among the children in the dance troupe, their families and communities and to broaden awareness about African and African American cultural traditions throughout Oregon.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Kukatonon Children?s African Dance Troupe (Kukatonon), founded in 1983, is one of a very few organizations in Portland primarily serving African American youth, with nearly 100% of girls participating as African Dance Troupe members and connecting them to African dance and cultures. Kukatonon has been serving communities of color and low-income communities in Portland for over three decades, providing a tuition-free dance program. In 2018, the Kukatonon staff sought input from Troupe members, parents and family members, and the community via a series of listening sessions. Troupe Members Feedback: ?We want to learn more about different African culturesX; "Deeper, more intensive programs with formalized curricula." Parents and Family of Troupe Members Feedback: "Expand to our school, neighborhood, community group!?; ?Great if programming could align with Oregon Core Art Standards and incorporate educational and social lessons.? The Community Feedback: ?It would be great to make the organization more inclusive and see it branch outX; "Work with other organizations to offer events, festivals, celebrations and more." In August 2018, the Kukatonon board and staff agreed to and accepted the transition from a unilateral focus of programming, to one that embraces the cultivation and development of youth and families through a multifaceted, culturally specific approach to six (6) core program initiatives (CPIs). The CPIs include (1) Mentorship, (2) STEAM Curriculum, (3) Cultural Services, (4) Community Involvement: Partnerships & Stewardship, (5) Kukatonon-Based Performances, and a (6) National and International Cultural Exchange (NICE) program. In December 2018, Kukatonon provided both arts and cultural education to the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) at their annual holiday celebration at IRCO-Africa House. Kukatonon secured its first-ever physical office space in the Black United Fund of Oregon?s building on Alberta Street, providing a space central to the Northeast community to collaborate on projects and meet with community and board members. On February 8, 2019, Kukatonon hosted the 1st Annual Community Discussion, a conversation on ?Bias Impeding Academic Achievement Highlighting the Research ?When Bias and Threat Persistently Interact? with guest speaker, Dr. Jason Okonofua, which was a free community event open to the public. 160 people registered, and roughly 100 attended even given the inclement weather. In March 2019, the first-ever Executive Director for Kukatonon after nearly two-years (Since April 2017) submitted resignation. The board of directors engaged Zeenab A. Fowlk with the Rural and Urban Development League (RUDL) to support the organizational transition as the Interim Executive Director. Ms. Fowlk has extensive experience working with both corporate and community basednot-for-profit organizations. Ms. Fowlk agreed to serve as a volunteer Interim Executive Director starting March 25, 2019 as we continue implementing our transition plan focused on leveraging current capacity through a strength-based approach to maximize program services offered. She works closely to provide attentive guidance and coaching to our board and staff, with the goals to increase donations and attract continued support, bring increase awareness to the new enterprising Kukatonon with functional and dedicated leadership, and drive to move forward valuable culturally-specific and enriching program services to the Pacific Northwest communities. Ms. Fowlk supported Kukatonon to maintain a continued presence in the Northeast community, through developing partnership with the Urban League of Portland Multicultural Senior Center in April 2019 to pilot increased programming, for a short time, to assess Kukatonon?s ability to efficiently manage moving forward. Urban League offered space through the Senior Center to conduct practice three days a week under $50 per week; host Friday family-night meetings, and plan for performances in a safe space with on-site security in the evenings until 8 p.m. To offer tuition-free services to the community, Kukatonon depends on partnerships and collaborations like these that also support with reducing overhead cost. In April 2019, to expand mentorship to older youth ages 16 to 24, Kukatonon introduced a pilot Community-Based Nonprofit Apprenticeship Program through partnership with Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center (POIC) and Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) SummerWorks. Four job descriptions were created to expand the experience for the interns and shared with POIC, along with a skill pre-screening selfassessment focused on workplace abilities and experiences. The Kukatonon board and staff, along with the Children?s African Dance Troupe members and volunteers participated in the 2019 Oregon Juneteenth Festival & Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade on Saturday, June 15th starting at the parking lot of the Northeast Portland Safeway on Ainsworth Avenue to the Legacy Emanuel lot between N. Williams and N. Vancouver. Also, at the 2019 Good in the Hood Festival and Parade, including tabling in the Kids? corner starting from the Legacy Emanuel lot to King Park in Northeast Portland. Each event garnered hundreds of spectators during the parade and community participation on site. Also, through Kukatonon-Based Performances, we were able to travel to Salem, Oregon with five youth, board volunteer and staff to spend twodays/nights participating for the first time at the 2019 World Beat Festival on June 29th and 30th to perform and exhibit Kukatonon program services, where nearly 10,000 attended during the two-day festival.$51,887$89,833
