Mission and Program Overview

Solar Energy Education

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Teaching the basics. Solar Oregon runs our Basics of Solar Workshops across the state, tables at community events, and publishes a monthly newsletter. These have helped inspire thousands of people to install solar and made it easier to do so. In 2014, we taught nearly 400 people in 18 of these 1 1/2 to 2 hour workshops. An independent study found 92% of participants found these workshops somewhat or very useful in their decision to go solar. That same study found workshop participants would most likely turn to Solar Oregon for reliable information about installing a solar electric system, more than all other sources combined.$141,925-
Making solar easier and cheaper. We are the lead Oregon partner in the Northwest Solar Communities effort sponsored by the US Department of Energy, working to cut permitting costs and time and the cost of finding solar customers. We built a best practices guide for local Oregon jurisdictions, and encourage our allies to follow it. We also participate in coalition efforts to improve state and local policy, and send critical action alerts to over 8,500 supporters of solar energy.--
Building peer support and deeper knowledge. We hold regular Solar Drinks social events, and promote learning from example with our Solar Winery Tour and Solar Ambassador programs. These provide opportunities for everyone, from the interested community member to the professional installer, to interact and gain knowledge, helping get over hurdles in the quest from idea to installation. We held seven Solar Drinks events in 2014, sharing issues on everything from solar lease options to German solar policies, from net zero construction to solar/electric vehicle market intersections. In October, we held our first held our first Cocktail Social with Governor Kitzhabers Energy Advisor Margi Hoffmann.--
Improving the strategy and knowledge of the solar movement. We run Solar Now! University each year, bringing together Oregon leaders in the solar field to share knowledge and strategize. Our three-day 2014 event in Hillsboro was our largest ever, with over 170 attendees learning everything from how to run Solarize campaigns to the new solar co-op laws, from cutting-edge solar technology insights to strategies to bring down solar soft costs.--
Supporting focused Solarize campaigns that provide peer support and the power of collective buying. Solarize campaigns focus communities with a quick turn-around and the power of working together, making it cheaper, easier, and more fun to install solar, thereby boosting demand. We are currently providing technical and educational support to Solarize efforts in the Rogue Valley, Columbia Gorge, Snake River Valley, and Corvallis.--
Connecting potential customers to installers. Through using our search tool, customers enter their zip code and pull up a list of supporting solar businesses that serve their area. We are upgrading our website in 2015 to make it even easier. In the policy world, we worked to help strengthen and pass solar co-op rules, allowing people who cannot put solar on their own property to buy into a co-op effort to build solar.--
We also supported the effort to cut the City of Portland's solar permitting fees by about 40%, cutting the red tape needed to install solar.Newsletter: We distribute our e-newletter to over 8500 Oregonians each month. The newsletter includes current news, ways to get involved, and upcoming events.Social Media: We currently have 3131 Facebook Likes and 3112 Twitter Followers, and in 2014 we posted scores of articles and updates spreading news of solar and how to get involved.--
