Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 6

Any organization or individual supportive of survivors of domestic violence and the mission of the new mexico coalition against domestic violence may apply for membership. Membership benefits include: discounted training; news blasts and action alerts; participation on nmcadv committees and work groups; exclusive presentations and speakers at memberonly meetings; consultation on a variety of issues that may concern member agencies. Membership categories include: principal, associate, or affiliate member. Membership dues are voted on annually by the board of directors.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7A

The coalition's board has five "regional representatives" positions, elected by a majority of the member programs in the corresponding region.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The form 990 is prepared by an accounting firm, and then the draft is provided to the executive director and the director of finance and administration for review. After this review is completed, the draft is presented to the board of directors for review and comment prior to filing with the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

The coalition's conflict of interest policy requires all members to annually disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest. In addition, members are asked to sign the conflict of interest policy annually and to disclose any conflicts during the year that might arise.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The board of directors reviews and approves the executive director's annual salary, with no participation by the executive director or other interested persons. The executive director's salary is established using comparable data for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similar nonprofits; consideration of roles and responsibilities of the executive director; and cost of living data. Comparable market data is obtained from salary surveys and form 990s filed by comparable notfor profit organizations. Discussions and decisions regarding the compensation are documented in executive committee meeting minutes. The executive director also receives reimbursements for routine, reasonable, and documented expenses incurred during the year under an accountable plan. The executive director travels throughout our service area. The organization has a travel policy that caps reimbursement levels and requires lowbudget travel.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15B

The compensation of employees of the coalition is determined by the executive director. However, total salaries and benefits expense is included in the annual budget which is approved by the board of directors.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The new mexico coalition against domestic violence (nmcadv) is a statewide organization with a national reach. The organization supports new mexico domestic violence programs, in a variety of ways, all designed to build program capacity to serve families and communities affected by domestic violence. Nmcadv coordinates and leads an effective response to dv through collaborations and partnerships with multidisciplinary groups. Nmcadv provides cuttingedge training and assistance including an innovative program to ensure that services are trauma informed. Nmcadv developed and supports a program to serve children exposed to domestic violence, using innovative strategies and that program is in its fifth successful year. The key to nmcadv's effectiveness is a commitment to innovation and to finding creative ways to provide help and support to programs that serve victims and their families. We lead and/or coordinate major policy efforts across the state. We are engaged in a planning process, which engages membership to explore possibilities for creating the future of domestic violence services in nm. Nmcadv led national efforts to explore the effectiveness of services to those who commit domestic violence and the organization developed and produced two, firstoftheirkind, national conferences on messaging about domestic violence. Currently, nmcadv is exploring trauma informed, evidencebased models of services and developing wellresearched performance and evaluation measures to guide our efforts. Because of the rural nature of most of new mexico, many domestic violence programs would lack access to innovative training, information, and assistance were it not for the efforts of the nmcadv. To increase access to training and support statewide, we use a variety of methods including inperson training on a regular basis in all areas of the state, as well as online training and peer trainers. The nmcadv staff mission, to which we strongly adhere, is to continuously and significantly increase value for members, stakeholders, and funders, now and in the future.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The coalition is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and has been classified by the internal revenue service as an organization that is not a private foundation. The financial accounting standards board (fasb) issued fasb asc 740-10, accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which provides guidance on how to measure and account for various tax positions. The coalition determined no material unrecognized tax benefits or liabilities existed at june 30, 2024 and 2023. If applicable, the coalition will recognize interest and penalties related to underpayment of income taxes as income tax expense. At june 30, 2024, and 2023, the coalition had no amounts related to unrecognized income tax benefits and no amounts related to accrued interest and penalties. The coalition does not anticipate any significant changes to unrecognized tax benefits over the next year. Management of the coalition believe its activities allow it to continue to be classified as an organization exempt from income tax under section 501 (c)(3) of the internal revenue code and has not identified any activities subject to unrelated business income tax. The coalition files federal form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, with the internal revenue service and copies of form 990 with the state of new mexico. The statute of limitations for examination of the coalition's returns expires three years from the due date of the return or the date filed, whichever is later. The coalition's returns for the years ended june 30, 2021 through 2023, are still open for examination and management anticipates the statute of limitations for the return for the year ended june 30, 2024, will expire in may 2028.

IRS990/Desc0THE NEW MEXICO COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (NMCADV) IS A STATEWIDE ORGANIZATION WITH A NATIONAL REACH.
