The MEGA Lab advances environmental education, citizen science, and scientific research focused on coral reef and coastal ecosystems. The organization supports scientific research, provides outreach education, and mentors students to promote public engagement in science and community based conservation. These activities address complex challenges related to climate change, ocean ecology, and human environmental interactions in marine and coastal systems, and require collaboration across scientific disciplines and with local communities to support the protection and sustainable management of these environments.
The MEGA Lab's exempt purpose falls under the general science (U20) category: Organizations that focus broadly on scientific research and inquiry or which engage in interdisciplinary science activities. Our organization will use 3 activities, scientific research, outreach education, and mentoring of students to focus broadly upon scientific research and inquiry. Our activities will encompass and engage in interdisciplinary science actions to support research and conservation efforts related (but not limited) to the changing climate, ocean ecology, and human-environmental connections in the coastal and marine areas. These are complex issues that can not be solved by a single scientific discipline and as such will require an interdisciplinary team of researchers, students, and community engagement. By conducting research, providing outreach education, and mentoring college students in marine and coastal conservation fields we are directly contributing to our exempt purpose.
