BY ASSISTING OFFENDERS TO ADDRESS UNDERLYING PROBLEMS, CRIMINAL RECIDIVISM IS REDUCED AND THE PUBLIC IS PROTECTED IN A MORE LASTING WAY THAN BY INCARCERATION. THIS PROCESS INVOLVES THE PARTICIPANTS IN A WAY THAT BUILDS A LASTING SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY. BUILT ON THE NATIONAL DRUG COURT MODEL, ANCHORAGE'S WELLNESS COURT HAS SERVED AS AN EXAMPLE FOR THE REST OF THE STATE. SINCE THE WELLNESS COURT WAS STARTED IN 1999. SIMILAR THERAPEUTIC COURTS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED IN BETHEL, JUNEAU, KETCHIKAN, PALMER AND FAIRBANKS. THE PROGRAM HAS RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, THE STATE OF ALASKA AND OTHER SOURCES. THIS FUNDING HAS BEEN USED IN COOPERATION WITH THE ALASKA COURT SYSTEM AND OTHER ENTITIES TO PROVIDE A COMBINATION OF ADDICTION TREATMENT, ASSISTANCE, MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT THAT HAS PROVEN TO BE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING RECIDIVISM AMONG OFFENDERS WHO ARE ADDICTED TO ALCOHOL AND DRUGS.

THERAPEUTIC JUSTICE PROTECTS THE PUBLIC AND REDUCES HARM BY INTERVENING IN DANGEROUSE AND SELF-DESTRUCTIVE LIVES. PARTNERS FOR PROGRESS COORDINATES WITH THE ALASKA COURT SYSTEM AND STATE ADMINISTRATIVE AGENTS TO PROVIDE AN INTEGRATED PROGRAM OF ESSENTIAL THERAPEUTIC COURT SUPPORT SERVICES. CORPORATION FUNDS SUPPLEMENT BUT DO NOT SUPPLANT OTHER THERAPEUTIC COURT FUNDING. SPECIFIC SERVICES PROVIDED BY PARTNERS FOR PROGRESS INCLUDE COURT ORDERED GROUP TREATMENT, SPECIALIZED PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR GROUP FACILITATORS AND THERAPEUTIC COURT TEAM MEMBERS, HOUSING ASSISTANCE AND SOBRIETY MONITORING FOR INDIGENT PARTICIPANTS, AND EMERGENT NEEDS OF THERAPEUTIC COURTS AND THERAPEUTIC JUSTICE PROGRAMS STATEWIDE. PARTNERS FOR PROGRESS ALSO RECEIVES STATE GRANT FUNDING THROUGH THE ALASKA HOUSING FINANCE CORPORATION TO PROVIDE RENTAL ASSISTANCE AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS TO EX-OFFENDERS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
