Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Founded by low-income tenants and neighbors in 1976, the cascade shelter project is a member led cooperative dedicated to sustaining truly affordable housing in the heart of seattle. Tenant-members collectively steward three, adjoined historic buildings with twelve individual apartments ranging in size. We provide housing, cultivate community, and maintain the financial and physical integrity of the property, prioritizing disenfranchised communities. In the context of a regional housing crisis, we offer a model of tenant-led and managed affordable housing that is autonomous, inclusivie, empowered, and sustainable.

New Members finished renovating 2 apt, including fixing insulation in the kitchen ceiling and replacing a whole new ceiling; in another apt they installed a new wall between the living room and the bedroom which had been removed by a previous member. Many members helped these new members with the work. Members removed concrete sidewalk on property which had deteriorated over the years from roots of cedar trees growing and forcing concrete to break and rise up, preventing use. Then all helped build a new one; digging, leveling the ground, adding small drainage rock, laying paver stones and spreading sand around pavers to pack them in, making a beautiful safe new sidewalk. Also members started building an outdoors storage shed for long wood and metal pieces protected from the weather. Finished installing and leveling gate at NE corner of property. Had estimates done for foundation work on front building; discussed 3 different plans and decided on contractor. Renegotiated Laundry Machine Service agreement and took over Money collection from machines; we recycle the quarters each month by buying them back from CSR.$0$0
