Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The common application is a not-for-profit membership organization of more than 750 colleges and universities across the globe committed to access, equity, and integrity in the college admission process. Last year, more than one million individual students from 210 countries and territories, one third of whom will be the first in their families to attend college, used its online platform to submit more than 5 million applications for undergraduate admission to its member institutions. Building on its forty-year history of reducing friction in the college application process, the common app works to close the equity gap by educating all students, regardless of circumstance, about the value, attainability, and affordability of a college degree.

The common application promotes access, equity, and integrity in the college admission process.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

Voting membership is open to colleges and universities that are a) not-for-profit; b) confer undergraduate degrees; and c) accredited by a regional or national accrediting association (or if located outside the u.s., a member of the council of international schools).

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

The election of the board of directors is performed by the voting membership of the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The irs form 990 is prepared and reviewed by an independent accounting firm, in conjunction with the organization's finance team. The form 990 is provided to the audit committee for review with a representative of the independent accounting firm present to address any questions. Subsequent to audit committee review, the form 990 is provided to all members of the board for their review prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

A copy of the conflict of interest policy is distributed annually to all members of the board and employees. These individuals are provided a conflict of interest disclosure form to notify the organization of possible conflicts. The policy is signed by the individual to affirm they understand and agree to abide by the terms of the policy. The policy requires periodic review to ensure compliance.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

It is the goal of common app to compensate each of its officers and key employees at a level that represents the fair market value of that individual's services, and does not exceed such fair market value, taking into consideration all fringe benefits, as well as total cash compensation. Common app has established a compensation committee (responsibilities fulfilled by the board executive committee) comprised of various members of its board of directors. At least every other year, common app engages an independent, third-party compensation consultant to analyze comparable data relating to the compensation of its ceo and other executives and/or disqualified persons performing work or services for the company. The compensation consultant uses comparative national survey data looking at a mix of industries and sizes of organizations, both non-profit and for-profit. The compensation consultant also reviews and analyzes the compensation from the 990's of peer organizations for similarly qualified individuals holding comparable positions at similar organizations. Regarding the ceo, the executive committee reviews and analyzes the consultant's report and other independent research and makes its recommendation to the board of directors based on those findings. After detailed discussion and deliberation among the board of directors, the recommendation is voted upon, accepted by the full board, and contemporaneously documented in the minutes of the board meeting. For 2024, compensation for the ceo and other executives was assessed against an independent third-party compensation study conducted in may 2024. Compensation for staff-disqualified persons other than the ceo follows a similar process. Annually, the ceo makes a recommendation to the executive committee regarding the compensation for other staff executives and/or disqualified persons. The executive committee reviews and analyzes the consultant's report and other independent research. After detailed discussion and deliberation among executive committee members, the recommendation is voted upon, accepted by the committee, and contemporaneously documented in the minutes of the meeting. For 2024, compensation for other non-executive staff was assessed against an annual benchmarking performed by common app people operations staff using data from a third-party vendor platform. Benchmark data provides the base salary ranges for each position based on title, years of experience, education, skills and qualifications, industry, and geographic location for similarly sized organizations.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are maintained in its main office. Inquiries concerning such can be sent to the chief executive officer or the chief operating officer.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

In accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, accounting standards require an entity to recognize the financial statement impact of a tax position when it is more-likely-than-not that the position will not be sustained upon examination. Management evaluated the organization's tax positions and concluded there are no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance.

IRS990/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE OCOMMON APP'S MISSION TO ADVANCE ACCESS, EQUITY, AND INTEGRITY IN THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS HAS NEVER BEEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN IT IS TODAY. WE HAVE SEVERAL INITIATIVES UNDERWAY TO HELP MORE STUDENTS ACCESS, AFFORD, AND ATTAIN POSTSECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES.WHILE ABOUT 1.5 MILLION STUDENTS USE COMMON APP EACH YEAR TO APPLY FOR POSTSECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES, THERE IS MORE WORK TO DO. INEQUITIES PERSIST IN THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS, AND THE PUBLIC'S CONFIDENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION CONTINUES TO DECREASE. OUR DATA SHOW THAT LOW-INCOME APPLICANTS ARE STILL SIGNIFICANTLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN COMMON APP'S APPLICANT POOL. WE ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING MORE STUDENTS FROM LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COMMUNITIES ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES. IN FY24, WE LAUNCHED WHAT WE'RE CALLING OUR NEXT CHAPTER: WE'RE WORKING WITH MEMBERS, COUNSELORS, AND OTHER KEY PARTNERS TO REACH OUR MOONSHOT GOAL TO CLOSE OUR EQUITY GAP IN STUDENTS PURSUING POSTSECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES. TO CLOSE THE GAP, COMMON APP NEEDS 650,000 ADDITIONAL APPLICANTS FROM LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COMMUNITIES BY 2030. WE ARE REACHING FOR THE MOON IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:- PROVIDING THE GATEWAY TO EXPLORE AND APPLY FOR MANY OPPORTUNITIES- SIMPLIFYING ACCESS TO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE- DELIVERING TAILORED INSIGHTS TO EXPAND OUTREACHTHROUGHOUT FY24, WE CONTINUED SEVERAL INITIATIVES TO WORK TOWARD THAT MOONSHOT GOAL. ACCESSING OPPORTUNITIES: CONTINUING TO GROW AND SERVE OUR MEMBERSHIPCOMMON APP BEGAN AS A GRASSROOTS EFFORT BY A SMALL GROUP OF LIKE-MINDED ADMISSIONS PROFESSIONALS IN 1975. SINCE THEN, COMMON APP HAS GONE BEYOND THE APPLICATION TO EMPOWER MORE STUDENTS TO ACCESS, AFFORD, AND ATTAIN POSTSECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES. THE ORGANIZATION HAS EXPANDED ITS MEMBERSHIP TO NEARLY 1,100 DIVERSE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THIS DIVERSITY IN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES MEANS THAT STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED FROM LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COMMUNITIES, HAVE EVEN MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO PURSUE THEIR POSTSECONDARY GOALS.IN FY24, A QUARTER OF OUR MEMBERSHIP CONSISTED OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, AND OVER 75% OF OUR MEMBER INSTITUTIONS HAD AN ADMISSIONS RATE OF MORE THAN 50%.PROVIDING THE GATEWAY TO EXPLORE AND APPLY FOR MANY OPPORTUNITIESDIRECT ADMISSIONSAS WE CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARD OUR MOONSHOT GOAL OF INCREASING THE NUMBER OF LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME STUDENTS APPLYING TO POSTSECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES, WE MUST FIND WAYS TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE ABOUT COLLEGE FROM ONE OF SCARCITY TO ONE OF OPPORTUNITY. OUR DIRECT ADMISSIONS PROGRAM AIMS TO FLIP THE SCRIPT ON COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND OFFER PROACTIVE ADMISSION TO STUDENTS. COMMON APP LAUNCHED ITS FULL-SCALE DIRECT ADMISSIONS PROGRAM WITH 71 MEMBER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN FY24. OVER 400,000 FIRST-GENERATION AND LOW AND MIDDLE-INCOME STUDENTS ACROSS 28 STATES RECEIVED PROACTIVE ADMISSIONS OFFERS. COMMON APP DIRECT ADMISSIONS ALSO INCLUDED OUTREACH AND RESOURCES TO FAMILIES AND COUNSELORS WITH STUDENTS RECEIVING DIRECT ADMISSIONS OFFERS. OUR RESULTS SHOW THAT 3 OUT OF 4 STUDENTS WHO ADDED A SCHOOL TO THEIR COLLEGE LIST UPON RECEIVING A DIRECT ADMISSION OFFER APPLIED TO THAT SCHOOL.AT THE STATE LEVEL, COMMON APP ALSO JOINED FORCES WITH THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT THROUGH THE CONNECTICUT STATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (CSCU) TO OFFER THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN THE STATE DIRECT ADMISSIONS TO BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS THROUGH THEIR CONNECTICUT AUTOMATIC ADMISSIONS PROGRAM (CAAP). STUDENT CONTEXT PILOTWE ALSO CONTINUED OUR STUDENT CONTEXT INVENTORY, WHICH GIVES STUDENTS THE OPTION TO TELL US MORE ABOUT THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN A CHECKLIST-STYLE SECTION OF THE APPLICATION. THIS CHECKLIST ALLOWS STUDENTS TO THINK MORE BROADLY ABOUT THE VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THEY BRING TO THE TABLE, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING COMMON APP MEMBERS THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE A STUDENT'S ACADEMIC RECORD IN A BROADER CONTEXT. THIS SIGNALS TO STUDENTS THAT THEIR LIVED EXPERIENCES MATTER. IN FY24, WE CONTINUED THE SECOND ROUND OF OUR PILOT WITH 23 PARTICIPATING
