Mission

The san jose youth symphony gives young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.

IRS990/Description0THE SAN JOSE YOUTH SYMPHONY (SJYS) WAS FOUNDED 62 YEARS AGO AS PART OF THE FORMER SAN JOSE SYMPHONY. SJYS OPERATED UNDER THE SAN JOSE SYMPHONY'S ADMINISTRATIVE AND FISCAL MANAGEMENT UNTIL 2001, WHEN THE SAN JOSE SYMPHONY CEASED OPERATION. TO PRESERVE AND CONTINUE THE UNIQUE ABILITY OF SJYS TO PROVIDE THE MUSICAL EDUCATION NEEDS OF YOUTH IN SAN JOSE AND NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES, THE PARENTS OF SJYS MEMBER MUSICIANS MOBILIZED TO FORM A BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND TO INCORPORATE SJYS AS AN INDEPENDENT, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION. NOT-FOR-PROFIT STATUS WAS GRANTED IN 2002. SJYS IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR AS AN INDEPENDENT, MUSIC ORGANIZATION, AND MAINTAINS SEVERAL INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES, CONSISTING OF: THE PRELUDE AND INTERMEZZO STRING ENSEMBLES (BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE GROUPS, RESPECTIVELY); THE PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE, THE CONCERT WINDS ENSEMBLE AND THE AVANT FLUTE CHOIR; THE CONCERT ORCHESTRA (INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA); THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (CREATED IN 2010-2011) AND THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (ADVANCED ORCHESTRAS). ALL SJYS ENSEMBLES PARTICIPATE IN A WEEKLONG SUMMER CAMP. SJYS HAS COLLABORATED WITH NUMEROUS ARTS ORGANIZATIONS LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THIS YEAR THE PHILHARMONIC WILL PERFORM A CONCERTO FOR TEN SOLOISTS ALL LOCAL BAND DIRECTORS. MEMBERS IN SJYS ORCHESTRAS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL SOLO COMPETITIONS AND PERFORM AS SOLOISTS WITH THEIR ORCHESTRAS. IN RECENT YEARS MORE EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON COMMISSIONING NEW WORKS AND PERFORMING MORE CONTEMPORARY AND AMERICAN MUSIC. EVERY TWO YEARS THE PHILHARMONIC EMBARKS IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERT TOUR. THE ORCHESTRA HAS PERFORMED IN SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONCERT HALLS IN EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA AND JAPAN. IN ADDITION, SJYS HAS ADMINISTERED A MUSIC EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM SINCE 2003, CALLED "MUSIC MATTERS," WHICH PROVIDES, LOW-COST, AFTER-SCHOOL, INSTRUMENTAL GROUP LESSONS PROVIDED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS AND EDUCATORS, WHO COME TO LOCAL SCHOOL CAMPUSES ONCE A WEEK TO TEACH 45-MINUTE CLASSES. THE CLASSES ARE SMALL, AND RANGE IN SIZE OF 8 TO NO MORE THAN 12 STUDENTS. LAST SEASON, THE PROGRAM WAS IN FOUR SCHOOLS: JAMES FRANKLIN SMITH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND ST. VICTOR'S PARISH SCHOOL, BOTH IN SAN JOSE; SILICON VALLEY FLEX ACADEMY, A CHARTER SCHOOL FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MORGAN HILL; AND NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL IN DOWNTOWN SAN JOSE. WE HAVE AN ARTISTIC STAFF OF MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR (YAIR, FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE) AND SIX OTHER CONDUCTORS WHO WORK AS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS. WE ALSO HIRE ANYWHERE FROM 12 - 14 PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO WORK AS SECTIONAL COACHES FOR THE ORCHESTRAS AT REGULAR INTERVALS THROUGH THE SEASON AND AT SUMMER CAMP. WE INVITE ON AVERAGE THREE MUSICIANS PER SEASON TO TEACH MASTERCLASSES IN AREAS SUCH AS STRINGS, WOODWINDS AND BRASS, COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION, AND GENERAL MUSIC HISTORY. OUR OFFICE STAFF CONSISTS OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (SHOKO, FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE), A PART-TIME BOOKKEEPER (LOUISE SAVOIE, A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR), AS WELL AS A PART-TIME OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR (JESSICA BENAK).

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation1THE PRELUDE AND INTERMEZZO STRING ENSEMBLES (BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE GROUPS, RESPECTIVELY); THE PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE, THE CONCERT WINDS ENSEMBLE AND THE AVANT FLUTE CHOIR; THE CONCERT ORCHESTRA (INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA); THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (CREATED IN 2010-2011) AND THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (ADVANCED ORCHESTRAS). ALL SJYS ENSEMBLES PARTICIPATE IN A WEEKLONG SUMMER CAMP. SJYS HAS COLLABORATED WITH NUMEROUS ARTS ORGANIZATIONS LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THIS YEAR THE PHILHARMONIC WILL PERFORM A CONCERTO FOR TEN SOLOISTS ALL LOCAL BAND DIRECTORS. MEMBERS IN SJYS ORCHESTRAS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL SOLO COMPETITIONS AND PERFORM AS SOLOISTS WITH THEIR ORCHESTRAS. IN RECENT YEARS MORE EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON COMMISSIONING NEW WORKS AND PERFORMING MORE CONTEMPORARY AND AMERICAN MUSIC. EVERY TWO YEARS THE PHILHARMONIC EMBARKS IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERT TOUR. THE ORCHESTRA HAS PERFORMED IN SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONCERT HALLS IN EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA AND JAPAN. IN ADDITION, SJYS HAS ADMINISTERED A MUSIC EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM SINCE 2003, CALLED "MUSIC MATTERS," WHICH PROVIDES, LOW-COST, AFTER-SCHOOL, INSTRUMENTAL GROUP LESSONS PROVIDED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS AND EDUCATORS, WHO COME TO LOCAL SCHOOL CAMPUSES ONCE A WEEK TO TEACH 45-MINUTE CLASSES. THE CLASSES ARE SMALL, AND RANGE IN SIZE OF 8 TO NO MORE THAN 12 STUDENTS. LAST SEASON, THE PROGRAM WAS IN FOUR SCHOOLS: JAMES FRANKLIN SMITH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND ST. VICTOR'S PARISH SCHOOL, BOTH IN SAN JOSE; SILICON VALLEY FLEX ACADEMY, A CHARTER SCHOOL FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MORGAN HILL; AND NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL IN DOWNTOWN SAN JOSE. WE HAVE AN ARTISTIC STAFF OF MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR (YAIR, FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE) AND SIX OTHER CONDUCTORS WHO WORK AS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS. WE ALSO HIRE ANYWHERE FROM 12 - 14 PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO WORK AS SECTIONAL COACHES FOR THE ORCHESTRAS AT REGULAR INTERVALS THROUGH THE SEASON AND AT SUMMER CAMP. WE INVITE ON AVERAGE THREE MUSICIANS PER SEASON TO TEACH MASTERCLASSES IN AREAS SUCH AS STRINGS, WOODWINDS AND BRASS, COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION, AND GENERAL MUSIC HISTORY. OUR OFFICE STAFF CONSISTS OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (SHOKO, FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE), A PART-TIME BOOKKEEPER (LOUISE SAVOIE, A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR), AS WELL AS A PART-TIME OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR (JESSICA BENAK).
