Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP) promotes environmental stewardship by connecting students to their community and local environment through comprehensive watershed education and service learning projects.
Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships' (SWEP) mission is to educate students in the Lake Tahoe/Truckee region of California and Nevada to understand the environment in which they live and to empower them to take action in their community to make a positive difference. Students, together with community partners and teachers, work collaboratively to address relevant environmental and social issues.

| SWEP promotes sustainability clubs which utilize interactive educational projects to empower students and teachers to be good global citizens working to ensure adequate resources for a clean and healthy environment. SWEP educators, along with high school student mentors, facilitate weekly club meetings with student participants to explore green service learning projects including waste reduction, reuse, recycling, gardening, composting, energy and water conservation, and pollution prevention. Through these meetings students work together to develop their knowledge, create a sense of civic responsibility, foster a school environment that emphasizes sustainability while practicing data, monitoring and other important language arts, math and science skills. These clubs are known as "Green Team", "Eco-Action" and "Envirolution Club", depending upon the grade level. Up to 7,500 students are eligible to participate. | $41,182 | - |
| SWEP promotes the Science Fair Expo which is a school day assembly that engages students in hands-on scientific exploration stations that emphasize the scientific method. Designed to look and feel like a science fair, the Science Fair Expo introduces students to the format of a traditional science fair while also introducing them to important scientific content. The Family Science Night program is a fun, interactive, and educational evening for families, which compliments a school day Science Fair Expo for students. These two programs are designed to increase the visibility of science in everyday life, and increase the confidence of children and their families regarding what science is and how to engage in scientific thinking. Community partners are included in the Family Science Night program as a way of showcasing their work and introducing students to real life scientists in our community. Approximately 1,000 students are eligible to participate in this program. | $12,916 | - |
| SWEP collaborates with the Tahoe Cross Country Ski Education Association (TCCSEA) to offer the Winter Discovery Program at the base of the Tahoe Cross Country Center just outside of Tahoe City. The Winter Discovery Program is an official SnowSchool site that works with local schools to provide winter ecology field trips that combine science explorations with cross country skiing. Third through fifth grade classes are encouraged to participate two to three times throughout the winter season. Approximately 300 students are eligible to participate in the Winter Discovery Program. | $6,659 | - |
| SWEP promotes learning of native fish in the Lake Tahoe area through its "Native Fish; Art & Environment" project. This one-hour classroom lesson combines a recycled art project with native species, life cycle, and service learning topics. Students learn about the Lahonton Cutthroat Trout while creating an art piece that will be used to promote community participation in Truckee River Day; an annual day of river, wetland and meadow restoration. SWEP supports classroom teachers participating in the "Trout in the Classroom Program." Trout in the Classroom is a conservation-oriented, environmental education program that connects students to their local watershed. Throughout the spring students monitor and care for Lahonton Cutthroat Trout eggs, raising them from egg to fry, and eventually release them into an approved nearby stream or lake. Through this project students learn about native species, habitats, water quality and develop a conservation ethic. | $6,310 | - |
| SWEP promotes the Sagehen Field Days where students learn about their own back yard, and develop their sense of place during a multi-day, outdoor-school experience. Fifth grade students participate in a series of field study activities led by Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships and University of California at Berkeley educators to learn about the Sagehen forest, watershed, and the plants and animals that exist in these environments. Approximately 100 students are eligible to participate in this program. | $5,046 | - |
| Promote watershed education through the Wonders of Watershed (WOW) and Tahoe Basin Watershed Education Summit (TBWES). WOW is watershed education program that combines environmental science and community service. Students participate in a hands-on, watershed themed, science lesson that explores issues impacting the Lake Tahoe Watershed, then take action through a service project focused on improving the health of our watershed. All watershed themed lessons are aligned with grade-level, state science standards. TBWES partners high school students and teachers from the Tahoe Truckee region with resource specialists, and resource conservation district personnel in a 3 day / 2 night, extensive watershed monitoring project in Blackwood Canyon near Lake Tahoe. Students from both South Shore and North Shore high schools work alongside scientific professionals, and be involved in hands-on, field data collection critical to developing future restoration activities for this impaired watershed. Students participate in a complete experience that combines community service, educational development, environmental stewardship, and career exploration. These programs benefit up to 7,500 students in the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area. | $1,646 | - |
