“Orca conservancy is working on behalf of orcinus orca, the killer whale, and protecting the wild places on which it depends.orca conservancy collaborates with some of the worlds top reserach institutions and environmental groups to address the most critical issues now facing wild orcas.orca conservancy is dedicated to advancing the welfare of orcinus orca, the killer whale, and protecting the wild places on which it depends. Our projects are designed to face the three biggest threats facing the southern resident killer whale population - lack of prey, toxins, and noise. 2023 projects: hydrophones: ai (artificial intelligence) for orca (ai4orca) is a means to identifying the 73 remaining members of the critically endangered southern resident killer whale (srkw) pods; comprised of j-, k-, and l-pod as they move within their designated critical habitat.between 2022-23, orca conservancy installed one ai4orca hydrophones in edmonds, wa at sunset bay beach camp. Additional goal is to install two additional ai hydrophones in central puget sound and within rosario strait. Water termperature testing and chemistry: now in its third year, orca conservancy has taken a blitz approach with trained volunteers, all performing simultaneous measurements along the snoqualmie river and soos creek throughout the year to not only increase public awareness of river(s) temperature as an indicator of water quality, but how temperature contributes to salmon survival while providing a high spatial resolution measurements of water quality. Water and air temperature, and a photographic record of the habitat will be used to help prioritize habitat restoration and identify areas important to initiate restoration projects as well as protection of riparian zones. Salmon habitat restoration: through grant funding orca conservancys secured a restoration site located in covington, wa whithin the green-duwamish watershed to work diligently towards restoring critical salmon habitat within the puget sound region which adult salmon are searching for as they travel up local rivers to spawn and potentially become orca food for the critically endangered southern resident killer whale population. Orca conservancys partnerships with the seattle seawolves, and the green river coalition have opened up additional restoration efforts along the green-duwamish rivershed for 2023. Goals for 2024 will be to secure an additional restoration site for 2025. Boater education and harassment: for the fourth year, orca conservancy volunteers will be stationed around south puget sound between june and september to educate boaters on regulations and the be whale wise guidelines. Research: contributing to the scientific community through research and studies to better understand multiple ecotypes of orcas and how we can better protect them. Conservation easements: in 2023 orca conservancy will complete the tranfer of a 5+ acre parel within bothell, wa. We have been working with the private landowner to permanently secure the use of said land in unity with the snoqualmie tribe to protect the conservation value in perpetuity. Emergency response to oil/chemical spills, strandings, entrapments: the southern resident killer whale population faces multiple threats, making them particularly vulnerable to the increased risk of oil or chemical spills within their critical habitat. To bolster preparedness in the puget sound region, we have been working with the united states coast guard, wdfw, and noaa fisheries to train responders on wildlife management and hazing during oil spills. Orca conservancy has also particpated in the response of orcas trapped in a saltwater lake in alaska along with training employees and scientists who are experienced in responding to strandings and entrapements and, are able to assist government agencies as needed.”
