Activity 2

Hands on assistance to communties: water rights 9-1-1. Through this program, celp helps local activists and tribes with land use- water supply problems by providing legal and technical guidance. Recent examples include: helping family farmers whose domestic wells were threatened by a large stockwatering operation mount a lawsuit that went to the state supreme court; assisting the swinomish and squaxin island tribes with lawsuits and advocacy to contest state policies that threaten tribal treaty rights and sustainable flows in our rivers for the future; and advising sequalichew creek activists in how to protect their sole-source aquifer from expansion of a gravel mine that would waste their drinkng water.

Activity 3

Columbia basin watch: restoring rivers in eastern washington. Celp brought successful litigation to restore flows to the falls of the spokane river which were being dewatered by a private utility, making the falls the centerpeice of the city of spokane's riverside park. Celp is also litigating to restore minimum flows for wild, endangered fish to icicle creek, and to protect the fish and flows of the similkameen river from renewed efforts to relicense enloe dam. Celp organized u.s. Environmental groups to work with columbia river tribes to advocate together for restoration of the columbia river's ecosystem in the ongoing process leading up to the renegotiation of the columbia river treaty. The treaty between the us and canada governs management of the columbia river, and operation of the river's dams in both the us and canada.
